ACROSS THE DIVIDE: CONTEMPORY ART BY CHINESE AMERICANS is on exhibit October 25 –November 20 at the Brick City Galleries, 215 West Mill Street, Springfield. Gallery hours are 11am-6pm Mon-Fri, and Noon-5pm Saturday. First Friday Art Walk November 1st 6pm – 10pm.
The nineteen artists in this exhibition have in common life experience, creative experience, and scholarly experience in the Sino-Asian region, as well as life experience, creative experience, and academic experience as both students and teachers in the United States. All are ethnic Chinese, came to the United States for graduate education in the fine arts after finishing undergraduate studies in China, and now hold academic appointments at colleges and universities across the United States.
Bridging the divide, multicultural dialog is present through a wide range of contemporary art forms including examples of sculpture, photography, oil painting, drawing, watercolor, ceramic, new media, and graphic design. Among the art work one will find impressions of traditional Chinese art alongside European academic approaches, as well as influences of the numerous movements that formed the international modernist avant-garde and the global post-postmodernism as familiar in the art schools and art scenes of Beijing and Shanghai as it is in those in New York and Los Angeles.
