Dora Quinn Arney Meikle, ’50, was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame this spring as part of the annual Women’s Sports Luncheon.
The inaugural Wynn Awards were also given at the luncheon. These new awards are named in honor of Dr. Mary Jo Wynn, the Missouri State University women’s athletics pioneer. She was the first woman named a Missouri Sports Legend.
About Dora Quinn Arney Meikle, ’50
Meikle graduated from both Greenwood Laboratory School and Missouri State University, and her father attended when MSU was called the Normal School.
She taught physical education in high schools and universities for 41 years. From 1965-94, she taught at College of the Ozarks. There, she created the women’s athletic program and was a champion of Title IX.
She told the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame that among her influences were three MSU women’s athletics legends: Dr. Mary Jo Wynn, Linda Dollar and Reba Sims. All are Missouri Sports Hall of Famers.
Some of her accomplishments at College of the Ozarks:
- Launched intercollegiate swimming, track and cross country programs in late 1960s
- Served as intramurals director for 14 years
- Directed aquatics program for 19 years
- Inducted into College of Ozarks Sports Hall of Fame in 1992
- Served as a national delegate of Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women
- Held officer roles in state and national athletics committees and alliances
About the Wynn Awards
There were seven recipients for the 2016 awards. Those with MSU ties:
- Marjorie (DeMarino) Bankovich, ’88, field hockey
- Kerry (Speaker) North, ’83, golf
- Jamie Vest, ’10, cross-country
