A Day In the Life of an MSU Student

Rachel ElderEver wonder what a day in the life of a college student is like? How about a day in the life of a Missouri State student? Well, meet Rachel.

On Thursday, I wake up about 8:45 a.m. to get ready for my commute to campus. My bowling class starts at 10:00 in the Plaster Student Union so I have no problem getting there in time to stop by Kaldi’s for my favorite poppy seed muffin and mango smoothie! My class has about 25 people and its fun because one of my good friends is in the class with me. When that class ends I head upstairs to have lunch with friends.

My favorite places to eat are Blimpie’s and Grill 155. The student union is the perfect place to hang out during lunchtime because I get to see friends and relax before I go to work at my on-campus job.

I work about four hours a day which provides a good break from school work and enough to make money to live off of. When I get off work, I head to my University Ambassador meeting at 4:15. I really enjoy going to meetings every other Thursday to see the many friends I have made through the organization. After meeting, I walk over to my sorority house to eat dinner with the girls living there. I like to stay, hang out, and catch up with girls I haven’t seen, but I usually head home around 8:30 p.m. to get started on homework for the rest of week.

Letters to Freshmen

As a brand new Missouri State student, wouldn’t it be helpful to have a collection of tips and suggestions to make your freshman experience the best it can be? Twenty-five freshmen who started in the fall of 2010 were asked to write a letter to the freshman class of 2011 to share what they’ve learned. They were told that these letters would be presented to students on their first day of fall 2011 classes.

Here’s a sample:

Welcome, Priscilla Ayala!

We’re excited to introduce Priscilla Ayala, our new Admission Counselor for Diversity Outreach and Recruitment in Western Missouri.

Priscilla Ayala
Priscilla Ayala

About Priscilla: Priscilla joined Admissions in January 2011. She holds a B.A. in History and Spanish from Missouri State University and is currently seeking her M.S.  in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Priscilla’s responsibilities include working with high school students, visiting high schools, and assisting with office projects.

Favorite thing about MSU: We have created a “home away from home” experience, with a sense of family and community. This was what drew me to Missouri State University, and has kept me here. My life-long friends and mentors that I have met at Missouri State do not feel like friends, but more like family, because we take care of each other. I also like the fact I didn’t feel lost in a sea of people. I have found a place I could really make a difference in, because I felt like my voice and ideas were valued and supported.

Fun in the Snow!

Snow days are a rare gift from above! With the recent heavy snowfall, campus staff enjoyed two days of closed offices and students enjoyed three days of canceled classes. With many of our recruitment publications showing bright, sunny days or crisp, golden autumnal scenes, we wanted to show proof that snow does indeed fall on campus…and the fun that can be had.

McDonald’s: an admission counselor’s best friend

As an admission counselor, I am constantly on the road in the fall traveling to high schools and college fairs. You may have even seen me at your high school this fall. Have you ever wondered what admission counselors do when we are on the road but aren’t in a high school? Most of the time we try to find someplace with wireless so we can answer emails and get some work done! So where do we go? You guessed it: the Golden Arches.

Almost every town has one, and they almost always have wi-fi access to the internet. Today I pulled into a parking spot at the McDonald’s in Cassville, and found myself staring at the following sign:

Moral of the story….perhaps I should take up fly fishing so I can get priority parking the next time I visit McDonald’s?
