Name: Hillary Roberts, MS, RD, LD
Title: Dietetic Internship Director, Senior Instructor
1. How did you get started in your career?
I chose the dietetics profession because of my love for science, health, and wellness. After taking BMS 240, Introduction to Nutrition, I knew I wanted to be a registered dietitian.
2. What is the main focus of your position at MSU?
As director of the dietetic internship, my main focus is communication. Keeping communication clear and open amongst preceptors, faculty, interns, and me is key to a successful internship.
3. What is a “current topic” in your field that you find interesting or innovative?
A current topic that I find interesting is food labeling. A press release issued by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in January 2013 discusses, “Can changes in nutrition labeling help consumers make better food choices?” The format of the Nutrition Facts label that we see on food packaging today has not changed significantly since the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act was passed in 1990 that mandated food labeling. From changing the look of the Nutrition Facts label in order to increase consumer comprehension, as well as adding more criterion to the label to provide more information to the consumer may change our shopping experience and influence the foods we choose in the very near future.
4. What’s your favorite thing about MSU?
What I love about Missouri State is the people and how genuine everyone is. I also love our Starbucks and the friendly MSU Starbucks baristas!
5. Do you have suggestions or advice for future MSU students?
My advice for future MSU students is to make an appointment with a faculty member in the program you want to pursue and come with a list of questions. Are you a recent graduate of an ACEND-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics? If so, come talk to me about Missouri State’s Dietetic Internship!
