The wine and distillation program at Missouri State University-Mountain Grove won three awards at the fourth annual Mid-America Wine Competition. The program received its first gold medal for the 2009 Chambourcin, a silver medal for the 2009 Catawba and a bronze medal for the 2009 Traminette.
The competition, held July 9-11 in Ankeny, Iowa, included wines from 15 Midwestern states. More than 550 wines were entered in the competition by 96 wineries. The judging panel for the competition was comprised of seasoned professionals and a group of local wine aficionados who had to pass a judge’s qualifying exam.
“These awards are the result of the efforts of a lot of people at Missouri State University, starting with the growing of the fruit through the bottling of the wine,” said Dr. Karl Wilker, associate research professor of enology.
