Dr. Robert Pavlowsky, professor of geology, geography and planning at Missouri State University, received a $34,740 grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) via the Greene County Soil and Water District for his “Sample Analysis and Nonpoint loads for the Asher Creek 319 Project.”
The Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute (OEWRI) and MSU are collaborating with the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks to monitor stream flow and water quality, including nutrients and bacteria, at three sites along Asher Creek. This monitoring will support the testing of management practices intended to reduce nonpoint pollution from agricultural lands in Greene County.
“The water quality data will be analyzed to identify nonpoint sources, calculate pollution rates and evaluate the effectiveness of pollution control measures in Asher Creek,” said Pavlowsky.
The funds will be used to support students, water quality analyses and field work for the project.
“The project is important because it aims to reduce nonpoint pollution from agricultural lands that represent a major land use in the county,” said Pavlowsky. “Extension of these findings to more widespread areas in the county have the potential to improve water quality in rural streams.”
