Two of Media, Journalism and Film’s broadcast journalism packages have received Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence awards in student competition for Region 7, which includes Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. Renee Goodwin received second place in the Television Feature – 4 Year College/University category for her news package, “Meth 2.” Phillip Pulliam took first place in the Television Feature Photography – 4 Year College/University category for his “Hotel of Terror” package. Award winners will be recognized at the 2010 SPJ Convention and National Journalism Conference, which will be held October 3-5 in Las Vegas.
“It’s worth noting that these students competed very well against rigorous competition from their counterparts at MU, KU, and Iowa State,” Media, Journalism and Film Department Head Mark Biggs says. “Their success speaks volumes about the overall quality of our Ozarks News Journal TV show, and the instruction they are receiving in our broadcast journalism program.”
The Mark of Excellence awards cap off a successful year for Media, Journalism and Film students. In addition to the recent success of The Standard at the College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers, Inc. national competition, and student success at the Broadcast Education Association Student Media Arts Festival, media, journalism and film students also received six first place and nine honorable mention awards at the Missouri Broadcast Educators Association Media Competition.
