Devin Duncan, a 2008 graduate of the accelerated Master of Accountancy program, currently works for KPMG in New York City as a Tax Manager. She currently works with mostly philanthropic organizations in New York City and around the world.
The following story has been shared here via the Missouri State University Alumni Spotlights page.
Why I chose Missouri State: I’m from Springfield, and I knew MSU had a good accounting program and the option for an accelerated master’s. Going through the master’s program was beneficial. I am a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and the Master of Accountancy program prepared me to take the CPA exam.
How the program helped me start my career: I was involved in business organizations and went to a lot of accounting career fairs, both of which helped me network and meet people who could help my career down the road. I had great professors who connected me with BKD, where I was an intern during college. That turned into a job. I would say going to MSU got me that job at BKD, where I worked for about five years before moving to New York a few years ago.
What I do in New York: At KPMG, I work predominantly with tax-exempt clients such as philanthropic and charitable organizations. I work with quite a few international charities, and learning about the global business environment makes my work so interesting. I enjoy public accounting and could see myself someday working for a large charity.
Life outside of work: I’ve always been pretty active. I like to run and do other outdoor activities. My husband (Blake, also an MSU alumnus) and I try to get out of the city every weekend and go hiking, to small-town festivals or apple picking. We love being in New York — there are good restaurants and good concerts!
How I stay connected to MSU: Blake and I try to go to all of the alumni events in New York City. We went to one last spring that was really great!
