Why did you choose MSU and the Interior Design program?
My sister attended MSU before me and I visited her often. I got to know the campus and liked it a lot. I attended SOAR in the summer and in talking with an academic counselor about the Interior Design program, I knew this is where I wanted to be.
What is your favorite class you’ve taken?
My first semester I took HIB-140. In this class you learn how to to draw and how to do things to scale. You also learn how to draw at different perspectives or elevations for doing floor plans. I’ve used these skills every semester since then.
What are some cool class projects you’ve participated in?
Last Spring semester in my Residential Design class we paired up with Harmony House here in Springfield. Each group was assigned a room and told what Harmony House wanted out of the space. Because Harmony House is a non-profit organization and runs off donations that definitely put things into perspective on how to look at things differently. At the end of the project we got to present to their board. It was a lot of fun and a very realistic project.
Through my minor I’ve gotten to take classes in the construction management department. In one of those classes we had to build an 8 x 8 room from scratch. We had to build then floor, put in the sub floor, and put up the metal studs to support it. At the end we got to decorate it. It was really challenging to learn how to do it all. Now when I watch HGTV I say to myself “I know how to do that.”
Have you participated in any internships or any career-building experiences?
In the summer of 2015 I participated in the Art and Architecture Study Away to England and France. The trip was everything I had hoped for. I have already started saving for my next trip to Europe! This summer I will be completing an Interior Design internship with Mid-City Lumber in Jefferson City, Missouri.
What is your dream job?
If I could have my way with life, I would flip houses for the rest of my list. Finding little, old houses, flipping them, and then turning around and selling them.
