COE BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA
January 15, 2016
8:00 – 9:30 a.m.
Hill 314
Dean Hough presented a request from RFT regarding student travel. He disseminated a draft of the Student Travel Policy that had been reviewed by the FAC. The policy now includes a request form to be completed by faculty who would be supporting and sponsoring individual student travel requests. The policy was approved by mutual consent.
Dean Hough noted that we currently do not reimburse for practicum oversight, as it was considered part of the work associated with course instruction. He asked if we should consider a policy to reimburse practicum oversight mileage and if so what parameters should be addressed. After discussion, the dean agreed to draft a policy that would cover the suggestions discussed and share it with the Faculty Advisory Council for their input/approval and then to submit to the BC for consideration at the February 2016 meeting.
Ms. Teresa Steele, COE Budget Officer, demonstrated how to navigate the web to access College of Education policies. The committee reviewed all COE Budget Committee Decisions that have been made since 2012. The Dean will work with Web and New Media to determine the feasibility of linking each decision with the full policy, per se. There were two recent policies that had not been added. Teresa agreed to have the policies that were missing, make editorial changes, and then post the revised version on the web.
Committee member Jon Turner broached the subject of creating more opportunities to host events for P-12 teachers on the MSU campus. This would not only be beneficial for the teachers, but could assist with marketing and recruitment, ala Counselors to Campus. One suggestion was workshops in the summer, and the dean asked Janice Duncan if Greenwood would be available. She indicated that it might be available for a week, and also suggested that the workshops be spread around campus as well. It was also suggested that there could be ‘mentor’ opportunities from our faculty to the teachers. It was also suggested that there be a similar model to Counselors to Campus but have a ‘Teachers to Campus’ type program.
Dean Hough encouraged BC members to provide BC reports during departmental meetings and stress the need for faculty and staff to bring forward suggestions. He noted that most of the policies we have developed over the past four years are the direct result of faculty bringing forward ideas, suggestions, concerns, and inquiries that were vetted by the FAC, BC, and LC.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 a.m.
