Study Away News
Student Participation
A total of 547 students participated in Study Away Programs in 2015-16, which is an increase of 34 students, or 6.6 percent, compared to 2014-15. While the numbers are an important key performance indicator, the quality of MSU programs is Study Away’s primary focus. Study Away values the investment of time, energy and resources of MSU faculty as they develop experiences that prioritize student learning and development.
Study Away Fair
The Study Away Fair will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 11 am to 2 pm in the PSU atrium. The fair is an opportunity for both students and faculty to learn about MSU study away options. Program provider representatives and MSU faculty program directors will be available to answer specific questions about their programs.
Study Away Faculty Luncheon
The Study Away Faculty Luncheon will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 12:30 to 2 pm in PSU 308. The theme is Maximizing Cultural Awareness in Short-Term Faculty-Directed Study Away Programs. Please RSVP by September 16 to Study Away at StudyAway@missouristate.edu or 836-6368.
Exploratory Travel Funds
The Vice President of Research and Economic Development and International Programs and the Provost will provide funding for faculty exploratory travel to be awarded in the fall of 2016. The aim of the exploratory travel funds is to increase the number of faculty-led short-term programs towards an end of increasing students’ cultural competence. Additionally, funded travel will help to ensure faculty preparedness in safety measures for future short-term programs. The deadline for the fall round of funding is October 7, 2016.
Award for Excellence in Study Away Programming
The Study Away Advisory Committee seeks to recognize MSU faculty who demonstrate excellence in developing and leading short-term study away programs. The award features include: $1,500 in professional development funds, recognition at the All Faculty Recognition Reception in May 2017, a trophy, and permanent recognition on a plaque in the Study Away office. The deadline to submit nominee names is October 21, 2016.
Study Away Scholarships
COAL, COB, CHPA, and CNAS will offer Study Away Scholarships/Financial Awards in 2016-17. COE, CHHS and SOA are considering this opportunity. Please find college scholarships listed here. Faculty who lead short-term programs may promote their college/school scholarships as a means to recruit students for their programs.

2016:
September 15 The new rules of engagement
Millennial alumni are willing to donate to and become involved with their alma mater, but they seek greater levels of personalization, customization and convenience than ever before. Unlike past generations of alumni, they are interested in displaying their skills and expertise, not just their time and money. This session will show research on the new rules of engagement and how MSU will recalibrate engagement strategies to appeal to those alumni and secure their loyalties and future major gifts.
October 20 Crowdfunding – Tips for Planning a Successful Campaign Join us for the first look at the new Crowdfunding site for the MSU Foundation. Slated for an early October launch, the new platform will have improved functionality and enhanced features for project leaders and donors. We will demonstrate the new site, and discuss approval guidelines, training and tips for success for Crowdfunding campaigns. With the enhancement of this new site, we anticipate a more streamlined and improved process for our faculty, staff and students as Crowdfunding continues to be a successful avenue for project-oriented fundraising.
November 17 “So you want to host a reunion and other ways to engage your alumni and friends”
Join us to discuss how to determine the most effective ways to connect with your alumni, and how we can help develop and support strategies to best leverage alumni resources for the benefit of your students. Whether you’ve never reached out to your alumni or you already have an active alumni group, you will leave the session with a better understanding of how and when to strategically and effectively engage your alumni, and how the alumni association can help support your alumni engagement goals. Oh, and did I mention … there will be door prizes?
2017:
February 16 The use of advisory boards and other volunteers This session will look at ways to involve your volunteers and the best practices for use of volunteers on your advisory boards. We will also preview a new volunteer leadership weekend scheduled for June of 2017.
March 30 How to know when your alumni are ready to give and other fundraising basics
Come learn some of the “cues” to listen for when having conversations with alumni to determine how and when they would like to get involved with the University, as well as defining the many ways they can participate and “give back.”
April 20 “So you want to move the needle?”
Bake sales and t-shirt sales won’t do the job. Impactful gifts come from individuals and very few give without being asked to do so. Now that you know when your alumni are ready to give, (from the March 30 session), learn how to set realistic and achievable fundraising goals, and the sound strategies for achieving them.
COE Organization
During our College Meeting on Friday, August 19th, we reviewed the COE organizational chart and introduced personnel in each academic department and support unit. Please note that in a day or two or three we will make a public announcement regarding additional support for students, faculty, and staff within that structure. This is a very exciting time for the University and the College, as our undergraduate enrollments continue to increase, and as we continue to develop new graduate programs and multi-cultural initiatives, adding faculty and staff along the way. Remember, healthy organizations experience growth, . . . and as they grow, they become better. Stay tuned for more on this very soon.
Sympathy
As many of you are already aware, Dr. Cathy Pearman’s father passed away Tuesday evening. Dr. Pearman thanks all those who have kept her father and family in their thoughts and prayers. I have sent a plant and condolences on behalf of COE.
Keep Calm and Semester On,
