The meeting started with a discussion on information from the Title IX office at the University. Dean Hough had everyone review the broader implications and issues having to do with sexualized violence, sexual assault, rape, sexual misconduct, dating and domestic violence, sexual harassment, sex discrimination, stalking, and pregnancy. He stressed that anybody, regardless of being faculty, staff, or administration who has knowledge of something is obligated to report it. This information needs to be discussed with all faculty and staff.
The football Bears home opener is September 1st. Bearfest Village will start at 4:00 p.m. The dean has a skybox and is inviting various people to be his guests. A group of CEFS students that gave a presentation at a national conference last year and will be recognized at the game. Sharon Lopinot discussed the COE Homecoming events for October 14-15. The One Room School House Scholarship will be given out on the 14th, and Golden Bears will be there for the presentation. The college will have tent on the 15th. Various student organizations will have games with prizes and food will be served. Prizes will be ordered through the dean’s office. Sharon will send the list of student organizations to the department
Heads, Janice and Deanna to look at.
Gilbert Brown’s office is in charge of recruitment and marketing. Judy Pickering will be working on this with Gilbert. Information was handed out on upcoming events. This information should be shared with faculty and staff. Anyone interested in volunteering for events needs to email Judy. Gilbert handed out another sheet with information on August – October recruitment events.
Jessica Robertson is working on student retention, which is one of the university’s ongoing goals. She will be working through Gilbert. Gilbert emphasized that a number of students take six years to graduate and they need to be able to graduate in four years. Students need to take credit bearing classes. Dean Hough asked Gilbert to have Rachelle Darabi attend one of the LC meetings and bring/discuss the information she has on different groups of individuals and how they can be helped.
The Volume 5, Number 1 issue of the Hough Post will go out next week. The dean asked everyone to send any information they have that they would like to see included to him by Monday. This needs to be ongoing with everyone.
Dean Hough, Dr. Sottile, Dr. David Brown, Candace Fairbairn, Ryan DeBoef, Dr. Cunningham and Rob Moore from the MSU Office of Student Financial Aid will meet tomorrow morning with area school superintendents and DESE representatives to discuss ways the State might adopt the MSU Internship Academy model and explore ways the State might fund same. More pressure is being put on IHEs to ensure student field and clinical experiences are preparing them to be “learner ready day one.” The dean met with the Regional Cooperating Teacher Summit Steering Committee in Jefferson City on August 4thand found out DESE intends to work with the RPDC to organize same. Russ Brock will work with Dean Hough on this.
James Sottile discussed the annual CAEP Conference he, Gilbert, and Ximena will be attending along with Chris Craig, Karen Engler, and Andrew Homberg. James also discuss the CAEP consultant visit which is scheduled for September 18 19, and 20th. Debra Eldridge is the consultant and was the CAEP Director in 2012 with whom Dean Hough worked that same year to address AFIs, submit a rejoinder, and arrange for a focused visit. Dean Hough reported that Dr. Eldridge is highly competent and a good friend of the College, now. James is working with a steering committee to have work groups established. More information to come. James handed out information from DESE regarding the definition of Certification Candidate and Three New Quality Indicators. Regarding the Certification Candidate our reporting does not include the number of students that did not complete the MOCA. James wants to see that all students complete the MOCA prior to student teaching. The dean is going to try to work with a state task force to recommend what the definition needs to be. Everyone agreed this was a good idea.
The Request for Faculty Positions was discussed by the dean. At May 2016 LC meeting the LC agreed that new position requests would be submitted to the dean by July 1st per the Strategic Hiring Plan process. However, only one RFP was submitted by that deadline, so Dean Hough asked the LC how they would like to proceed. If COE is replacing an existing position, that is not a “strategic” request. Only new positions should be considered “strategic” hiring proposal request, and an RFP must be completed and reviewed by the FAC, Budget Committee, and LC. Also, if the decision is made NOT to replace a current position but to reallocate those funds for a different position, that should be considered a “strategic” hiring request, as well. Dean Hough asked department Heads to discuss this with their faculty at their first faculty meeting. The LC then agreed to extend the date for “strategic” RFPs to September 1st. This includes any and all RFPs that were submitted after July 1st. Department Heads agreed to schedule separate departmental meetings in August, notify the dean when and where they will be held, and invite the dean to attend portions of the meeting. The Dean agreed to fund these events for each academic department.
The Missouri State University long-range plan will be distributed and discussed at the college meeting. Our college needs to develop a plan to go along with the university’s plan. After discussing how to do this it was decided that each department/unit would develop their own plan and forward it to the dean who will then aggregate them into College plan.
