MSU Football Game- COE Skybox – September 1, 2016
Superintendents, guests, and students from Springfield, Riverview Gardens and Pattonville High Schools enjoyed the skybox and first MSU football game of the year. The students also enjoyed a tour of the campus and a number are interested in attending here when they graduate. Dr. Gilbert Brown and Dr. James Satterfield will visit Hickman-Mills, Raytown, Pattonville, and Riverview Gardens later this month.
Making Your MISSOURI STATEMENT
MSU chief of staff, Mr. Ryan DeBoef is looking for examples of students, faculty, staff and perhaps alums who exemplify “Making Your Missouri Statement.” Ryan would like to have folk recognized at the October 2016 Board of Governors’ meeting. This recognition is for someone who has taken action in terms of putting principles into action. Please send Dean Hough by September 20th any names of people you think are worthy of consideration. Along with your nominee’s name, please send some brief information about what your nominee has done and the impact it has had and is continuing to have.
Internship Academy Year 2 – Off to a Great Start!
Candace Fairbairn and David Brown report that twenty-nine College of Education students began their year-long internship program on August 1st with co-teaching trainings, in-house faculty professional development, and district kick-offs. Year two brings expansion and a warm welcome to the Springfield Public School District with four interns placed at Wanda Gray Elementary under the mentorship of Principal Angie Carder, Teacher-in-Residence Cathy Barrett, and four new Master Teachers. Districts and schools participating in their second Internship Academy include: the Primary, Elementary, and Upper Schools in Logan-Rogersville; Summit Intermediate, John Thomas School of Discovery, and Mathews Elementary in Nixa; and McCulloch Elementary in Republic. Teachers-in-Residence are also all returning and include Meredith Carrisalez, Lori Elliott, Jenny Ritter, Andrea Schlager, and Sara Tipton. Teachers-in Residence collaborate with COE faculty to ensure that all competencies are met through face-to face seminars and in-school experiences.
LGBTQA Association Events
The Missouri State LGBTQA Association will have two events in the month of September. The first is a luncheon at the Union Club on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 11:30-1. Come anytime during that block that fits your schedule. The second event is an off-campus event on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 at Calgaro’s Pizzeria downtown.
The LGBTQA Association welcomes anyone who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ population or as an Ally of that group. We generally meet the second Wednesday of the month at the Union Club for lunch and the last Friday of the month at an off-campus location. Melinda Hammerschmidt, GLS, Defended Dissertation
On September 7th, Greenwood Laboratory School First Grade Instructor Melinda Hammerschmidt successfully defended her dissertation, “Teacher Perceptions Regarding the Teaching of Gifted Students in the Traditional Classroom Setting.” The final step of earning her Doctorate of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas Tech University, Dr. Hammerschmidt will attend the hooding and graduation ceremonies December 16th and 17th in Lubbock, Texas. Congratulations!
MSU Spring Public Affairs Conference – Panel Members or Plenary Speakers
Missouri State University hosts an annual Public Affairs Conference in which experts and informed citizens participate as panelists in discussions surrounding a given topic. This year’s theme is “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: Perspectives on Self-Government.” The representatives from the College of Education are Megan Boyle and Steven Hinch, who ask for suggestions for panel members or plenary speakers.
Candidates may contribute to this year’s theme from various points of view and disciplines, including activists, policy makers, public thinkers, practitioners, and those in government, the arts, business, education, and the sciences, and ideally are from areas outside of Missouri. Please email Megan Boyle and Steven Hinch with suggestions, including 1) the name, title, and affiliation of proposed panelist, 2) a biographical sketch, and 3) how he/she fits into this year’s theme. Suggestions are due by 5 pm Thursday, September 15.
Citizen Scholar Nominations
The Citizen Scholar Award was initiated in 2007 as a special Board of Governors program to recognize outstanding citizen scholars at Missouri State University. Fifty-three students since 2007 have been recognized for his/her stellar achievements with academics, community engagement and leadership. Citizen Scholar nominations may be made by Missouri State University faculty and staff members each fall.
It’s that time of year to nominate our amazing students for the 2016-2017 Citizen Scholar Award. Nomination packet information can be found below. The deadline for the nomination packets is Sept. 15, 2016 by 5:00 pm. Study Away College & Career Readiness Comparison in Belgium
Marci Dowdy, Ed.D., CLSE, is accompanying students who will visit high school students and faculty in Brussels and Antwerp. They will spend a day in Bruges, as well. Fall Showcase: Saturday, Sept 24, 9:00 – 11:30am, PSU 314
High school students and parents are invited from around Missouri and surrounding states to come for campus tours and opportunities to meet department representatives and faculty about our programs. Attendees are also invited to the afternoon football game (if tickets are available). Various Halls are open from 12:30 – 1:00pm for parents and students to view facilities. COE will have a table with information in PSU 314. Nice Bear Wear is appropriate dress.
