Leadership Council
October 20, 2016
8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Notes
In attendance: Russell Brock, Christine Combs, Denise Cunningham, Janice Duncan, Karen Engler, David Hough, James Satterfield, James Sottile, Becky Swearingen, Rose Lee, Teresa Steele, Kim Dubree
The meeting was called to order at 8:30 by Dean Hough. Rose Lee handed out a COE Phone List to the department heads stating that Jen Cox in Administrative Services needs to know which COE faculty will be needing offices during the summer. COE must vacate Hill Hall in May of 2017, but there is no place for COE personnel to go until August, 2017. Locations may be able to be found for those who need offices for the summer. Dean Hough pointed out that all staff will need offices for the summer. Department heads will need to speak with faculty to determine office needs. Dean Hough asked department heads to have their list of summer office needs to Rose Lee by the end of next week.
A meeting is set up for November 2 to discuss this further.
James Sotille gave an update from the CAEP conference he attended. He handed out a table of EPP programs that was divided into four columns. He noted that only one SPA, Social Studies, has an approved SPA. Three programs have SPAs that are in progress, 16 programs have SPAS that are in the AIM system, and 13 programs are not in the system. Dr. Sotille noted that those programs that are in the AIM system (column C) and not in the system (column D) are a concern. Dean Hough will find out what is needed for state review. There is documentation needed for CAEP, but we, nor CAEP, seem to know what it is. Dr. Satterfield noted that we can remove “Career Counseling” from the list of programs because it is not a degree program. COE needs to determine what mechanism to use to obtain CAEP accreditation. James Sottile expressed a concern that we will not be able to get the SPAs completed in time if we wait too long. One of the positive things from the conference is that there is a template to use for recruitment. Dr. Sottile also noted that the sessions he attended were not helpful, as the information was inconsistent. He also found out that the mega-data we are collecting is not enough for CAEP. At the next Leadership Council Dr. Sottile will share the CAEP report. Dr. Sotille pointed out that one area in the report was troublesome, as COE is responsible for the secondary education programs even though we have no control over them.
The Leadership Council then took a break to attend a meeting in Cheek Hall with Doug Sampson and the architects hired to do the Hill Hall renovation. The architects went over the process and time lines and then asked a few questions regarding obtaining input. A meeting with all Psychology and Education faculty and staff will be scheduled for the week of October 24-28, to obtain input. Then, there will be subgroups developed for further input as the renovation plans move forward.
The Leadership Council returned to Hill Hall to continue their meeting. Dr. Sottile explained to the council about the Tripod study that COE is involved in. This is a research group that has done studies with children and teens. The older students do on-line surveys while the younger children do oral surveys. The students are asked questions regarding their teachers who are MSU graduates.
ETS-NOTE – This program is ready for a pilot field test. The assessment is comprised of two sessions and will be set up in Hill Hall 314. Our student teachers who wish to participate will receive $250 for a 3-4 hour session. They will then receive another $250 for the second 3-4 hour session. There is also a $250 good faith bonus if open ended questions are answered with more than a simple yes or no. Dean Hough suggested asking our Teacher- In-Residence interns to participate in this. The total time this pilot field test should be 6-8 weeks, with it culminating in March of 2017.
Kim Dubree noted that student teachers will need to meet DESE guidelines so she requested that we move the application to student teach deadline up to December 1 from February. Dean Hough asked department heads to work with Kim and Dr. Sottile to develop a list of students who need to be contacted and asked to apply early.
Chris Combs mentioned that student teacher numbers were up in West Plains. When asked how the “Grow Your Own” program was doing there, she replied that she has not heard much.
Russ Brock gave a report of the RPDC Directors meeting. The main areas of concern were consistency among centers regarding fees charged and services provided.
Denise Cunningham mentioned that Nixa Public Schools will be interviewing 8 students in the Early Childhood program for potential participation in a year-long internship program similar to the Elementary Internship Academy.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:55 a.m.
