Clarence Lawson, State Teacher’s College Graduate, Visits MSU
Karl Schmidt with the Dean, Clarence Lawson and his family, at the One-Room Schoolhouse
Clarence Lawson met with Dean Hough and Library Dean Tom Peters on Saturday October 29th to give his oral history of attending and then teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. Mr. Lawson attended the State Teacher’s College (now MSU) during summer months to earn a teaching license from the State of Missouri. As he explained, prior to formal teacher preparation, anyone who had graduated from the 8th grade could be hired by a community to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. Clarence also validated the authenticity of the College of Education’s one-room schoolhouse. Dean Hough provided an oral history of the construction of our 1905-era replica, and explained how we collected the furnishings and artifacts contained therein.
The Dr. Michael N. Compton Public Affairs Essay Contest at MSU
Larry R. Bradley, Author, Neither Liberal Nor Conservative Be: An Action Plan for People Disgusted by Polarized Politics is an alumnus of MSU and met with the dean regarding a public affairs essay contest. Larry is a Board member for the Institute for Development of Ethics and Leadership (IDEAL). IDEAL is a non-profit organization established by alumni of the MSU Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity. IDEAL will be conducting the Dr. Michael N. Compton Public Affairs Essay Contest in 2017 in conjunction with the Spring Public Affairs Conference. Larry will be IDEAL’s primary contact with MSU. The contest is named in honor of the founding member of IDEAL. It was Mike’s vision for IDEAL to do something to support the Public Affairs mission and the contest was his idea. Unfortunately, Mike died in November 2015, but the Board has carried on to make his idea a reality. Larry asked the dean if our college would help him promote the contest to our students as a means of supporting the MSU Public Affairs mission. Last year the winner received a $500 cash prize and designated her favorite charity to receive another $500. We expect to offer the same prize in 2017.
They be in touch in early January with the details to forward to department heads and faculty, which will include a copy of the flyer we will be posting in all the dorms and classroom buildings.
Meanwhile (per a question you asked during our meeting), here is the link to a description of the contest on the MSU Public Affairs web page. It’s on the left hand side under Awards, Grants and Scholarships. http://publicaffairs.missouristate.edu/ When you click on the link on that page it takes you to this more detailed description of Dr. Compton and the contest. https://websites.omegafi.com/omegaws/sigmapimissouristate/dr-micheal-n-compton-public-affairs-essay-contest/?doing_wp_cron=1454604858.5109009742736816406250
They be updating that page for the 2017 contest.

Pilot Program for Thesis-Writing Students
Tom Tomasi, Associate Dean, Graduate College has asked for those who work with thesis-writing students to pass along the following information:
The Graduate College is piloting for the first time this semester something that should be very helpful for your thesis-writing students. In regard to the formatting of the thesis, this should reduce the time/effort needed to make final corrections after we get our reviews back to the students.
To minimize the number of format revisions we will require, I strongly encourage your students to take their written theses over to the Writing Center as soon as they have a draft with all the components (including preliminary pages and reference). Staff at the Writing Center are now trained and doing format checks of theses, and we want as many students as possible to participate this semester in this experiment. One can now book an appointment with the Writing Center online using TutorTrac, and one of the options for appointment-type is a thesis check (http://writingcenter.missouristate.edu/66508.htm ).
Let him know how this works out. Any assistance you can provide in “pushing” the students to utilize this new service would be appreciated.

Springfield Public Schools 8th Grade Career Fair – October 4, 2016
MSU School Counseling Interns Anne Gibler and Amanda Martinen pose with Clif Smart.
Marci Dowdy, Sr. Instructor, CLSE, reported that Tuesday, October 4th was an eventful day for the middle and high school counselors and students. Many months of planning and preparation culminated in the first ever All-District 8th Grade Career Expo. Thanks to a generous donation from the SPS Foundation, we were able to transport over 1800 students to the Oasis Convention Center to participate in the Expo. While there, students were able to explore approximately 85 different career options from the six career paths. Students also attended two breakout sessions – “SPS Choice Programs” and “How to Choose a Better Tomorrow”. The Middle School Counselors prepared the students prior to the event by facilitating classroom lessons which helped them learn more about their own strengths and interests. Follow-up classroom activities are planned to help reinforce the learning experience. The School Counselors are very appreciative of the support from the community and SPS staff. This event would not have been possible without all of the volunteers.
Keep Calm and November on…
