NOTES
In attendance: David Hough, Russ Brock, Denise Cunningham, Janice Duncan, Deanna Hallgren, Cathy Pearman, James Satterfield, James Sottile, Rachael Dockery, Kristi Oetting, Kim Dubree, John Reinert
Dean Hough invited MSU General Counsel Rachael Dockery to discuss Background Check Finding Procedures on students. The checks are conducted on student teachers and yearlong practicum students. It is also done on students placed in child care agencies. There was a question from a secondary faculty member who bypassed protocols, so the dean wanted to discuss this as a group to make sure we are all on the same page. Karen Engler will work with secondary faculty on this. Kim Dubree reviewed our current process. If something shows up on a student’s background check there is a form to complete, which the student takes it to their assigned school and the school decides whether or not they will take the student. After reviewing our documents, Rachael recommended we make sure language is included in all MOUs with schools and agencies that they have the right not to take a student, but explain why. We need to work with all of our “partner schools” on this. After discussion, the dean concluded that we need to revamp our MOUs and written documents to make it clear what the expectations are. He noted that our non-discrimination policy needs to be included, as well. Our policy should be discussed with institutions that take our students to make sure they accept it. The institutions need to send us their policy to make sure we are on the same track. We need good relationships with our “partner schools/institutions” and students. The dean asked Kim and Rachael to work on this. Kim will then report to James Sottile who will in turn report back to the dean. Denise asked if the agreement forms for CFD internships should be reviewed. Rachael replied they should and James Sottile will work with Denise. Rachael offered to review all COE documents and MOUs related to the placement of students in schools and agencies.
Dean Hough invited Kristi Oetting, Computer Services, to discuss the Fundamentals Training Overview of Office 365. She explained how to get on Office 365. On the MSU webpage, click on the BearPass link and then Faculty and Staff email. You log in with your private ID @missouristate.edu and your password. With Office 365 you get full versions of Office Suite, 5 personal installs of Office Suite, 1 TB of cloud storage, opportunity to share documents, better storage of documents, skype for business and more. Programs are constantly being updated. Through Skype for Business you can meet with a group, share documents, and add others to a conversation. In Calendars you can send meeting invites and schedule a skype meeting. Dean Hough believes this is the way to go and it will be used more over time, especially by students. The dean asked Kristi if she would be able to attend other LC meetings and discuss the various programs more in depth. She is willing to do this. Department Heads can also contact her to talk to their faculty.
Summer School funding was discussed. The dean asked department heads if they wanted to use the current process or consider another option. After a discussion it was decided department heads would send information to the dean by December 2nd that included:
- List of all courses offered – based on student need
- Sections
- Online/Tradition/Blended Class
- Anticipated Enrollment
- Who would be teaching
After the information is submitted, the dean will meet to discuss the information with all three department heads.
The Budget Committee met and will look at where to put funding after long-range strategic plans are submitted. The post-it notes from the faculty discussion on long-range plans at the November 11th College Faculty Meeting are being compiled in a document that will be emailed to those involved and posted on the college website. This information can be shared with faculty and staff when finalizing plans, which are due to the dean by the end of January. The fall faculty meeting went well. There were good discussions and interaction, especially on the draft mentoring document. Dean Hough mentioned that Faculty Advisory Council would like to see area schools included in recruitment activities.
Around the Table
Cathy Pearman
Regarding Request for Program Support Funds, money is for the academic year. Since money was just allocated, one of her faculty members asked if money could be carried over to the following year or change the request due date to August so funds would be available all year to work with. It was discussed that the fiscal year does not usually close out until October, so there would be no way to know how much money is available before that. The dean said it is a good point and he could possibly “bank” the money and distribute the funds in August.
Janice Duncan
They currently have the most students ever enrolled at Greenwood, which is around 380.
Denise Cunningham
Search Updates:
Early Childhood has started to bring in three qualified candidates.
Childhood & Family Development is having their first screening and requesting to bring three candidates in.
The Elementary position does not have a very good pool of candidates and is being re-advertised.
The Clinical Instructor position is reviewing applications and should be moving forward.
Karen Engler
Secondary faculty are getting geared up for the new DESE requirements. Judy Gregg was a huge help in getting all of the information turned in.
Kim Dubree
They are finishing Spring student teacher placements and looking at Fall 2017 students to make sure they meet qualifications.
Russ Brock
Russ met with superintendents after the MASA meeting and got feedback on how to work with them regarding professional development. The center is looking at a different delivery model and coming up with different packages for districts. They are also in the process of changing their name and want to re-brand. Russ attended an RCET board meeting. Currently, 55 school districts belong. Springfield will not participate next year. Regarding recruitment/retention, micro credentialing allows their center to put forward a training system to provide credentialing although there would be requirements and it would be decided by a group. This could help with the job process.
Meeting adjourned 10:54 a.m.
