Presidential Scholarship Interviewers Needed
Per Scott Handley, Assistant Director, Honors College:
The Honors College and the Office of Financial Aid are still in need of 26 volunteers to assist us in interviewing Presidential Scholarship candidates for the 2017-2018 academic year. If you are interested in supporting us, please see the invitation below.
The Honors College is actively working to recruit the next class of Presidential Scholars. The President’s Office has identified the recruitment of these high-achieving students as a top priority and we would like to ask for your active support. As an Honors College instructor, you are highly likely to see these students in your classroom. You are also ideally suited to help us to differentiate between typical honors students and the most academically-promising applicants to our institution.
The Presidential Scholarship is Missouri State University’s most valuable academic merit scholarship, worth up to $50,000 over a four-year period. The University is prepared to offer up to 35 of these scholarships to students entering in Fall 2017. In order to qualify for consideration, applicants must have an ACT score of 30 or higher and a high school GPA of 3.90 or higher. Qualified candidates complete a supplementary application, an essay outlining their academic interests and goals, and an on-campus interview with faculty members and current Presidential Scholars. We would like to invite you to serve as an interviewer on one of our faculty panels. This is a rewarding opportunity to not only meet some fascinating students, but also to champion your own department and to lure these students into your classroom and programs.
On-campus interviews will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2016. We are hoping that you are available to serve during one of the following shifts: 8:30-12:00 PM or 1:15-5:30 PM. During this time, you will interview approximately six Presidential Scholar candidates as part of a panel of three (two faculty members and one Presidential Scholar). At the conclusion of your shift, we hope that you will join us and our guests for a complimentary lunch or dinner in the Plaster Student Union Ballroom.
To give you some sense of the potential of these students, the Presidential Scholars that entered the Honors College in Fall 2014 finished the academic year with an average GPA of 3.83. Compare this figure with the overall Honors College average of 3.72 and the university-wide average of approximately 3.00.
The experience that these applicants have on the interview day is critical in their determination of whether or not to enroll at Missouri State University. We want these students to have the opportunity to interact with the best faculty members on campus and we are counting on your support. If you are available to participate, please send a confirmation email to honorscollege@missouristate.edu no later than Friday, November 18.
Sincerely,
John F. Chuchiak, IV, Ph.D.
Professor of Colonial Latin American History & Director of the Honors College
Distinction in Public Affairs Program
From Karissa Knedgen, Graduate Assistant, Office of Student Engagement….
I am the graduate assistant for Leadership Development at Missouri State. Currently we are recruiting students to participate in the Distinction in Public Affairs Program. We thought that students in your area may be interested in the red flag issues pertaining to education in the Springfield area, as well as other issues impacting the city. If you could pass on the below information, as well as the attached application to your students, we would greatly appreciate it. The application can also be found on the Missouri State Distinction in Public Affairs website. If you have any questions, please email or call me at (417)836-4386.
The Distinction in Public Affairs program is designed to give students an in-depth understanding of the Missouri State Public Affairs mission and allow them to work with a community partner on a “red flag” issue in the Springfield community. Information on “red flag issues” can be found here. Participants will be put into small groups facilitated by faculty and staff based on the “red flag” issues they are most interested in. Groups will host a poster presentation on the initiative they work on over the semester. Students who participate in the Distinction in Public Affairs leadership program are the only students allowed to present at the National Public Affairs Conference hosted at Missouri State University in April. Upon completion of the program, participants are given a medallion to be worn at graduation.
Click below for the application. Applications are due by January 11, 2017.
