Lambda Beta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi Book Drive
Dr. Kayla Lewis with members of Lambda Beta Chapter. Thank you note from Mrs. Bolinger, 4th Grade Teacher.
The Lambda Beta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi held a book drive for Watkins Elementary during the month of December. Members were able to collect a number of books. In addition, KDP received a $300 donation from Taco Bell to purchase additional books for the book drive. In all, the group collected approximately 475 books. On December 20th, Dr. Kayla Lewis, faculty advisor for the group, and several KDP members were able to go to Watkins Elementary to let children choose their books. All 300 students in the school received a book to take home with them for Christmas. Remaining books were distributed among teachers to help build their classroom libraries. The school and the students were extremely appreciative of all of the new books!
Springfield Public Schools’ IB Programme Collaboration with MSU
On November 2, 2016, representatives from Springfield Public Schools’ International Baccalaureate Program came to MSU to propose a collaborative in which student teachers for grades K-12 would be trained in inquiry methodology and placed in Springfield IB schools for a yearlong student teaching experience.
Teaching and learning in the IB approach utilizes a constructivist approach that prepares learners to engage in inquires in the real world. The three principle parts of the International Baccalaureate programme include inquiry, action, and reflection. Inquiry is the centerpiece of the written, taught and assessed curriculum. Action in the programme is learning by doing in practical, real-world experiences. Reflection, an intricate part of the IB learning process, promotes deeper learning of the original inquiry.
On December 1, Dr. Andrew Homburg, MSU Music Department, and Michelle Satterfield, COE, toured Pipkin Middle School and met with SPS IB Programme Coordinators to further discuss the collaboration.
Hiring & Search Updates
Ms. Sascha Mowrey has accepted the position of assistant professor of early childhood education in the Department of Childhood Education and Family Studies. Sascha is scheduled to complete her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in May 2017, and will begin working in COE on August 14, 2017. Sascha holds a MAT in early childhood education from Willamette University in Salem, OR, which she completed in 2004, and a BA in human development and linguistics from the University of California, San Diego, where she graduated cum laude in 2003.
Ms. Sara Tipton has accepted the position of clinical instructor in CEFS where she will be the program coordinator for the Internship Academy beginning June 2017. Sara is currently a Teacher in Residence at the Logan-Rogersville School District where she has been working since 2006. Sara taught kindergarten classes in Champaign, Illinois, and Houston, Texas, from 2004-2006 and 2002-2004, respectively. She holds a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois where she graduated with honors in 2002, and MS and Specialist degrees in educational administration from MSU.
Kim Dubree is the new Coordinator of Certification and Field Experiences. In this new role, Kim will complete all duties and responsibilities associated with both certification matters and clinical and field placements conducted through the COE Student Services unit overseen by Dr. Gilbert Brown, associate dean for student services. Kim first began working for COE as an administrative specialist II in 2010, was promoted to assistant coordinator of educational field experiences in 2011, and then to coordinator of educational field experiences in 2012.
The RFT Department Head search committee has narrowed its pool of candidates to a very short list. After conducting telephone interviews with finalists, the committee has requested and the appropriate University Offices have approved bringing a finalist to campus for an interview as soon as arrangements are made.
A search will soon be underway to replace the position vacated last June by Dr. Michele Smith when she was named the new MSU assistant vice president for student affairs. This position is coordinator of recruitment, marketing, and alumni relations for COE. This will be an internal search and the successful candidate will continue to report to Dr. Gilbert Brown.
Dr. Stephen Kleinsmith, Superintendent, Nixa Public Schools, will begin working part-time for COE during the spring 2017 semester to operationalize the DESE’s “Grow Your Own” program. Dr. Kleinsmith will continue in his role as superintendent through 2018.
The CFD program is searching for an assistant professor with a background in child development. Three candidates will be coming for on-campus interviews in January.
The elementary education program is searching for two assistant professor positions for the undergraduate program and one associate professor for the graduate program. The initial pool in the fall was minimal, so the first date of consideration was extended, and additional advertising is now underway. Hoping to achieve a more robust pool of candidates, the search committee anticipates conducting initial reviews later this month with telephone or skype interviews to follow in February 2017.
Budget Committee Meeting
The COE Budget Committee will meet on January 30, 2017, to discuss potential funding for the new COE Long-Range Strategic Plan 2017 – 2020. Again, a draft of this plan will be shared at the Spring College Faculty meeting on January 20th. The College plan is a compilation of departmental and unit plans that were submitted at the close of the fall 2016 semester.
Key elements of the COE plan that will need to be considered for funding include recruitment of students; student supports to increase graduation rates, passing scores of licensure exams, employment rates, and successful job performance; increased student and faculty diversity; raising the COE profile via academic programs, research, and state-wide and national recognition; and participating in multi-cultural experiences in a global society.
All the above are consistent with the MSU public affairs mission and fit well with the COE “One Missouri” initiative we are currently working to expand. With no new funding to support these goals, it will be imperative that the Budget Committee work carefully, thoughtfully, and cooperatively with the Faculty Advisory Council and Leadership Council to prioritize areas of immediate and future development. I trust this will be an exciting, collegial process as we move forward together, expanding our influence and continually create a legacy of learning.
