COE Leadership Council
January 12, 2017
9:00 a.m. – Hill 314
Notes
In attendance: David Hough, Gilbert Brown, Christine Combs, Denise Cunningham, Janice Duncan, Karen Engler, Cathy Pearman, James Satterfield, James Sottile, Stephen Kleinsmith, Kim Dubree, Juli Panza
The meeting started with the dean introducing Dr. Stephen Kleinsmith, Superintendent, Nixa Public Schools. Per DESE’s “Grow Your Own” initiative and our university’s goal of increasing student enrollment, Dr. Kleinsmith has offered to work part-time with our college on student recruitment. The dean asked members for ideas. One was when talking to high school counselors; remind them to talk to all students about college and career choices, not just those that have indicated going. The dean requested the LC consider EAD programs and the MAT specifically. James Satterfield’s faculty are currently working with Springfield area teachers about a “Credit by Examination” program. Candidates would submit a portfolio, which would be reviewed by EAD faculty and could be given up to 12 hours of course credit toward their degree. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program has been around for a while. The purpose is to provide a program for former graduates without teaching certification to obtain it. Dr. Kleinsmith said they have a number of students in the “18” range for the ACT who would be great teachers and possibly something needs to be developed to work with them. Chris Combs mentioned that West Plains has open enrollment and has MOETS groups at high schools in their area for students interested in pursuing an education degree. They are tracking how many students pursue a degree and discussed scholarships available. They could use more marketing for their area. Cathy Pearman discussed that MAT students have a documented barrier; the students need to take a certain number of content area courses and it is hard to get classes at a time that they can take them. Dr. Kleinsmith ended with saying his goal is to help our college. He will follow our lead and assist where needed. Following are ideas that the dean sent to Dr. Kleinsmith following the meeting:
- Recruitment, per DESE’s “Grow Your Own” initiative. (Work with all three department heads, i.e., Cathy Pearman, Denise Cunningham, and James Satterfield.)
- Recruitment of under-represented students, per the MSU COE “One Missouri” initiative. (Work with our point persons on this: Associate Dean Gilbert Brown & CLSE Dept. Head, James Satterfield.)
- Recruitment of students from rural Southwest Missouri schools, per #1 & #2 above. [Work with Gilbert Brown, James Satterfield, Russ Brock (SWRPDC), and Jon Turner (EAD).]
- Recruitment of graduate students into the EAD program. (Work with James Satterfield and EAD faculty.)
- Co-teach “School Finance” course for EAD beginning fall 2017 with Brenda Lance, Nixa P. S.
COE department heads agreed to reach out to Dr. Kleinsmith, follow-up on the above, and report back to the LC at the next meeting.
Our MOU document for districts placing student teachers has been revised. In the past if a student got a hit on their background check the student had to take a form to the principal to be discussed and signed off on in order to student teach at that particular school. Now language “student would not be placed until cleared by DESE” was implemented in the MOU to take care of this. Every agreed the change for the better. James Sottile and Kim still need to work with Rachael Dockery on CFD and COU students who need a different MOU.
Dean Hough distributed the draft COE Three-Year COE Strategic Plan. The plan was changed from Five-Year to Three-Year plan to address budget constraints and any future changes in personnel. Additions/changes need to be emailed to Sharon by noon on Tuesday, January 17th. The draft will then be updated and printed for the COE faculty meeting on January 20th. Members were asked as they review the document to also look at the university’s plan and to think about how the COE plan should be formatted.
A draft copy of the COE Strategic Plan for Prioritizing Faculty & Staff Position Requests was distributed by the dean. It is now more concise and eliminates the need for two separate documents. The dean will discuss the document with Faculty Advisory Council at their February meeting and report back to LC.
MACTE emailed a reminder regarding the Outstanding Beginning Teacher Award. Institutions can submit up to two names for the award by January 20th. Dean Hough asked two questions; how do we go about recommending names and what procedures do we follow? After a discussion, the group decided to work on getting an elementary and secondary name to submit. Denise will work with David Brown and Sarah Tipton regarding first year teachers from the TIA program last year. Karen Engler will email secondary program coordinators to see if they have any names to recommend. They will be asked to send her names by noon tomorrow. Secondary faculty will be asked to complete the form and letter on the teacher selected. A letter will also need to be written by the person’s principal. If there are two or more secondary recommendations, a committee will be formed with the dean and two elementary and two secondary education faculty/staff to decide.
Department Heads were asked to email the dean the name of an undergraduate student to be considered for the Faculty Senate Academic Integrity Council. Email names to Sharon by tomorrow. The dean will forward the names to Faculty Senate who will vote for one student rep.
Juli Panza received an email from Angie Miller, OTC, regarding changes to the AAT document. The problem with the AAT is that students end up transferring to our college with more classes than they need to continue on with their degree. After discussion it was agreed that due to DESE changes, Julie will work with Gilbert on a revised document and send it to the dean. The dean may make a few changes and then send it to Clif Smart regarding it becoming our official document. Cathy Pearman is meeting with Angie today to resolve the problem with EDT345. When final, the document will be send to Karen Engler.
Around the Table
Gilbert Brown
The Alumni Association 2017 MarooNation Ball in St. Louis is Saturday, January 21st. Gilbert is unable to attend. He asked if anyone was interested in attending. James Satterfield would like to go. People who support our college are also invited and it was suggested to possibly invite the superintendents from Riverview Gardens and Pattonville. Gilbert, James Satterfield and Jon Turner are going to Monett tomorrow to discuss One Missouri. This will be a follow-up meeting. The discussion will be regarding students attending MSU to earn an education degree and then return to teach in Monett after graduation. Gilbert taught a course for two weeks in China. He said they are opportunities for our faculty to teach a two-week or semester class.
James Sottile
His graduate assistants have been entering data on students into Taskstream (TS) and some errors were noted. Dean Hough said our college would pay for student accounts (one semester) in TS related to those students effected by the expiration of the archive part of e-portfolio. Frank Einhellig said his office would pay for any secondary student accounts. James also mentioned that STEPS would remain active until May 31st. It is prominent to note that only the archive part of E-Portfolio is no longer active.
Cathy Pearman
Cathy suggested that Gilbert talks to the para-professionals regarding attending our university when he is at Monett tomorrow. There should be federal grants available to help them pursue a teaching degree if interested. Camdenton is interested in being part of the Internship Academy. She will be visiting with them on February 10th. They have two new hires; Sara Tipton, Clinical Instructor and Sascha Mowery, Early Childhood.
Chris Combs
They are busy preparing for the new semester developing shared assessments. There is a wait list for 318. She will make sure the information is forwarded to Cathy. Chris is also working with Rebecca Smotherman who will be teaching classes there.
Karen Engler
Karen has been meeting with Judy Gregg to discuss DESE requirements.
