Planning, Design & Construction Requests Your Input Regarding the HILL HALL Renovation Project
The following is an email received from Mark Wheeler on March 28th:
Design Development Documents
Hill Hall, one of the three original buildings on our campus’ historic quadrangle, was completed in 1924. The original building has seen many improvements over the years, but is in need of a major renovation to accommodate demands for additional space, efficiency, and accessibility. The primary purpose of this project is to renovate Hill Hall to improve access, provide new electrical and mechanical system upgrades and improvements to lab, office and classroom spaces.
This project is available for review and can be found at: http://architect.missouristate.edu/AvailableforReview/. In an effort to reduce printing costs and conserve resources, paper copies of these documents are not being produced and distributed. Please review these electronically. Should you want to print out a page or section of these documents, they are provided in an electronic format that should allow you to do so directly.
All reviews and comments on these documents are welcome and appreciated. The more thorough review of the plans we have now the better the end result will be when construction is completed. Please submit any comments you may have to the Office of Planning, Design & Construction by 5:00 p.m., April 3, 2017. Feel free to return your comments to us in any fashion that works best for you. You can email any comments you wish to: Mark Wheeler. If no comments are received concerning these plans by this date, it will be assumed that they are approved as submitted and work will continue on the project.
If there is anything our office can do to assist in the review of these documents, please let us know. Thank you for your continued interest in this project.
What does the review phase of this project indicate?
Schematic Design: During schematic design, the consultant commonly develops study drawings, documents, or other media that illustrate the concepts of the design and include spatial relationships, scale, and form for the owner to review. Schematic design also is the research phase of the project, when zoning requirements or jurisdictional restrictions are discovered and addressed. This phase produces a final schematic design, to which the owner agrees. Costs are estimated based on overall project volume. Schematic design often produces a site plan, floor plan(s), sections, an elevation, and other illustrative materials; computer images, renderings, or models. Typically, the drawings include overall dimensions, and a construction cost is estimated. Note: The agreement may actually spell out what is to be delivered.
Design Development: Design development (DD) services use the initial design documents from the schematic phase and take them one step further. This phase lays out mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, and architectural details. Typically referred to as DD, this phase results in drawings that often specify design elements such as material types and location of windows and doors. The level of detail provided in the DD phase is determined by the project requirements. The DD phase often ends with a formal presentation to, and approval by, the owner. Design development often produces floor plans, sections, and elevations with full dimensions. These drawings typically include door and window details and outline material specifications.
Construction Documents: Once the owner and the consultant are satisfied with the documents produced during DD, the consultant moves forward and produces drawings with greater detail. These drawings typically include specifications for construction details and materials. Once CDs are satisfactorily produced, the project is sent to contractors for pricing or bidding. This phase results in the contractors’ final estimate of project costs. The construction document phase produces a set of drawings that include all pertinent information required for the contractor to price and build the project.

Lambda Beta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi iLead Workshop
The Lambda Beta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi is sponsoring a workshop, iLead, Saturday, April 8th, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., for all education majors. Dr. Kayla Lewis, RFT Assistant Professor, faculty advisor for the group would like you to share this information with your students. Click on flier below:
Graduate IDF Judges Sought
Dr. Thomas Tomasi “would like to develop a cadre of MSU ‘friends’ to participate in the graduate Interdisciplinary Forum (IDF) as judges. This worked well for the 3-minute thesis (3MT) competition that was held (sic) last November. He invites (sic) you to pass on the invitation below to retired faculty, members of your Advisory Boards, alumni, professional colleagues in the community, etc. Because students are told to present to a general audience, the judges don’t have to have research experience or a doctoral degree; a familiarity with graduate education is sufficient.”
“If your invitation to these “friends” of the University is done by email, sending a cc to me might ensure that they don’t get asked by my office too.”
“COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION REQUESTED – IDF JUDGES
Missouri State University will be holding its annual Graduate Student Research “Interdisciplinary Forum” (IDF) on Saturday morning, April 29th. Approximately 150 graduate student from a wide variety of graduate programs will be presenting, both in poster and oral format, so it is really an event to behold.
We like to provide feedback to the students about their presentations (it is an educational experience, after all), and reward the best presentations. Therefore, we need judges to view each presentation, and we are asking for your help. Student are told to present to a general audience, so judges are assigned to groups of presentations (n=8-10 in two hours) in which they are NOT experts. If you would like to support graduate education at MSU, please consider helping in this way (and prepare to be amazed). If you can help, use the link below to sign up as a judge. If you have any questions, contact Tom Tomasi (Graduate College Associate Dean) at tomtomasi@missouristate.edu or at 417-836-5169.
