MSU COE Studying Feasibility of Offering New Certificate Program
Dr. Chris Craig, deputy provost, has been leading a feasibility study to determine if MSU might be able to offer a certification program that would provide a college experience for students with mild intellectual or developmental disabilities. Students would choose either a residential and commuter college experience, based on personal preference. Both approaches would be designed to provide academic course work leading to a certificate. In addition to the academic knowledge component required to achieve this certificate, students would learn life skills associated with independent living, socialization, and career readiness. In sum, the group is calling the proposed program Bear POWER. Ultimately, it would help students achieve self-reliance in a fully inclusion collegiate environment.
Bear POWER students would be afforded all opportunities and activities offered by MSU and the COE. Individual support would be provided as follows:
- Accommodations to allow access to traditional University classes
- Internship experiences on campus or in the community
- Participation in University-sponsored organizations, clubs, and activities
- Mentoring
- Residence life experiences by living in University housing (based on personal choice)
A major factor impacting the University’s ability to offer such a program is the amount of individual support from donors, grants, and contracts.
First-Year Teacher Survey
Dr. Ximena Uribe-Zarain submitted the following:
“Since 2007, DESE has administered an annual survey of first-year teachers in Missouri public schools. The survey was created by people from a variety EPPs around the state, including MSU. Every year, the aggregated results are available for institutions. Program level information is not available. As long as they receive 15 responses, the results are available. We know that the statewide response rate last year was 67%, but without more details specific to programs, the information they provide is of little use for program improvement.
We would like to conduct a very similar survey at the end of student teaching and compare it to DESE’s first-year survey the following year to see if we can approximate and predict the results. If nothing else, we will have very useful information from all our candidates and it would be specific to each program.
The survey will be based on DESE’s survey minus the mentoring information and it would be collected through Taskstream. The Taskstream team will be responsible for administering the survey, collecting the data, and disseminating the results.”
Everyone should have received the following from the FCTL:

Book Talk- Whistling Vivaldi
Whistling Vivaldi by Claude M. Steele focuses on the health impact of prejudice and discrimination. If you think you handle the stress of being the “other” or you think you interact with everyone “equitably”, this book helps you rethink the long-term impact of inequity on our campus and in our community. Steele speaks to the signs that appear emotionally and physically related to prejudice and discrimination. This book makes each of us more aware and vested in how to create and maintain equitable environments. A few more FREE copies of the book are available at the FCTL, Meyer Library Room 204. Join us for an in-depth and lively discussion of this engaging and challenging book.

Summer Accessibility Institute
The Accessible Learning Institute is an intensive four-day program designed to help participants identify and resolve accessibility concerns in their courses. In creating an awareness around physical and cognitive disabilities and the learning barriers often experienced by those students, the program hopes to increase the adoption of proactive approaches to course design that will reduce the need for students to request certain types of academic accommodations that could delay student access to information.
The Accessible Learning Institute supports the university’s mission to provide quality and excellence in teaching that values a student-centered learning environment promoting inclusiveness, fairness, equity, and social justice. The program also aligns with the university’s values of fostering an environment of respect for all individuals, collaboration, and continuous program improvement.
Interested in learning more about the Accessibility Institute? Contact the Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning at: fctl@missouristate.edu or 836-3059 or go to: http://www.missouristate.edu/fctl/321673.htm.
