Notes
Attendees: David Hough, Russ Brock, Gilbert Brown, Denise Cunningham, Janice Duncan, Deanna Hallgren, James Satterfield, James Sottile, Kim Dubree, Jane Robison
Jane Robison, Executive Director of ELI, attended LC to ask for help and support for a proposal she is submitting for a Saudi Teacher Training Program. This would be a yearlong program for 30 K-12 Saudi English teachers. Part of the program would include practicums for all of them during October and November. Dean Hough, et al. agreed that COE could conduct workshops; however, practicum placements may be difficult to procure. They would need five teachers in a school, some ELS, some English classrooms. Kim said they have thirty MSU English students to place this year and it is hard finding placement for all of them. Janice said they could come to Greenwood. She could take fifteen. Kim then suggested Monett and an afterschool program that Springfield Public Schools has. Russ has some of his consultants that would fit the school category and some of the teachers could go with them on their visits to schools. After discussing this, the dean asked Jane to talk to the interim dean, COAL and head of the English department first and then come back to COE if they need assistance from us. Again, the COE recommendation is to utilize GLS by rotating the Saudi teachers through Greenwood five at a time. Janice said the teachers could be at Greenwood two days a week “cultural emergence” and possibly take them on a visit to some of the public schools.
The COE Mentor Leadership Seminar went well on Monday. LC members believe it was of great value and is a good start to the semester. The Dean recommended facilitators continue to focus conversations on the “Role of Mentors” in each topic area discussed, rather than assuming participants make those connections on their own. The September Mentor Leadership Seminar will take place on the 22nd, and the Dean will invite all assistant professors to attend the seminar, as well. The topics for the meeting would be good for the mentees to be part of. Janice would like to send two or three people who would be “Trainers of Trainers” and bring the information back to discuss with their mentors/mentees. The group thought this was a good idea.
The Provost’s Office has requested specific information regarding educational affiliations with clinical sites and school districts. It is most likely that additional information not already housed in a central location or database such as Digital Measures will be requested throughout the 2017 – 2018 academic year.
The Dean requested that departments develop and maintain a system to identify and share information about faculty and student awards and achievements every month. This way we can collect information throughout the year as we go instead of responding to requests on short notice.
Rachel Heinz is the new director of the Bear Power initiative. Bear POWER has raised over $100,000. She will attend LC meetings periodically to provide updates. All expenses for Bear Power are being paid from donations/grants. Rachel has completed paperwork to advertise for a graduate assistant.
Russ Brock discussed the Regional Teacher of the Year Recognition that will be held on August 28, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Kentwood Crystal Ballroom. The three teachers listed below will be honored and compete at the state level for State Teacher of the Year. State Board members Peter Herschend and Maynard Wallace will both attend. Let Russ know if you would like to attend.
- Shannon Pagan, 4th grade teacher at Buchanan Intermediate School in Branson
- Daniel Gutierrez, 6-8th grade vocal music teacher at Reed Academy in Springfield
- Blake Richter, 5-6th grade music teacher at Inman Intermediate School in Nixa
James Sottile discussed students who need a Taskstream account for one year since we retired STEPS. Most of the students are not in COE. There may be a few other students who need a one-year subscription. The total cost is $950.00. James asked who should pay for the subscriptions. The dean will first go to Frank Einhellig to see a) if he will pay for the students not in COE, b) ask Frank to ask the deans to pay for the ones from their college and finally c) pay for it out of COE funds. He will let James know. The MoCA must now be attempted prior to student teaching. A discussion followed on who should monitor it. Our Advisement office monitors COE students. The dean said all coordinators should be informed about this and should communicate with the students. Gilbert suggested putting this information in a document. Kim noted that all program coordinators get a list of students who have applied for student teaching. The coordinators then approve who may student teach. This list could include who attempted the MoCA. The dean also said to work with Karen Engler, have her talk to EPPC, and go from there. James went on to discuss that the Field Experiences office staff place practicum students for MCL414 each fall (Modern/Classical Languages). They pay us $40 per student. There are typically a few students each semester but this semester there are fifteen students. The question was should we continue to place these students? The dean said we should continue if we said we would do it, but confirm with the program coordinator if she wants us to continue this practice. James is having a coordinator and supervisor meeting for Taskstream. Travis Marler is the coordinator of Taskstream.
The dean is going to have “One Missouri” status discussed at all LC meetings. Everyone has a role in this. Gilbert is working on a CAEP report regarding underrepresented students. There were 392 students; only 78 earned their degrees. He is working with underrepresented students and encouraging them to become teachers. We are working on collaborating with rural schools and superintendents. Bear Up is a summer program for students that are sophomores/juniors in school. The program went well this year. Next year he would like to have twenty students enrolled. Gilbert is currently working with Lees Summit, River Gardens and Pattonville. This is one of Gilbert’s top priorities this year. The dean noted it is not one person’s responsibility. There are different components to it: counseling, early childhood, child/family development, etc. It is key to have someone in the schools to work with. We need to answer the question, why pursue an education degree?
Dr. Suzanne Hull, DESE Coordinator of Education Preparation, will say a few words at the College meeting tomorrow. Clif will give a university update then he and Mark Wheeler will address the Hill Hall renovation. Nothing is going to change but Clif needs to hear what people have to say.
Around the Table
Denise Cunningham
They have six new faculty who are excited about starting classes. She is having a get to know you BBQ at Phelps Grove Park tonight.
Gilbert Brown
They are in the process of searching for an academic advisor to replace Courtney Lawson. They have a good applicant pool and plan to start interviews next week. At the next Spring faculty meeting, he would like to discuss building academic programs.
James Sottile
James distributed a handout, “College of Education-Spring 2017: Average MoPTA scores for Tasks 2-4, Overall MoPTA Score and Overall Pass Rate”. The students did well.
Russ Brock
He is working on filling a couple of positions. They added two new positions, Leadership Training and Career Advisement/Career Regional Pathways. Russ will inform COE of trainings they may want to attend.
Janice Duncan
They had professional development training on Tuesday. Live shooter training and “Stop the Bleeding”, how to pack wounds. She was able to get twenty new high back office chairs for her faculty compliments of Glass Hall. Apparently, faculty will be getting new chairs for the renovated section and sent a lot of furniture to surplus. The University paid for a new fence around Greenwood. They are starting to analyze data regarding why students leave. This year 45 left and 48 enrolled. The new locker rooms will be built in November.
Kim Dubree
This fall there are 221 student teachers. She will be attending the supervisor meeting this afternoon.
Dean Hough
Juli Panza, Kim Dubree, Rose and Teresa will be added to the LC distribution list. They will be informed that they only need to attend if there is something they need to discuss. Gilbert will attend alumni events to look for opportunities to identify people we can work with regarding recruiting under represented students.
The meeting adjourned at 10:42 a.m.
