Early Sunday morning there was a horrific shooting attack at an Orlando, Florida nightclub that resulted in 50 people killed, including the gunman, and another 53 victims who sustained injuries in what is described as one of the worst mass killings in this country. While the details regarding the attack are still being determined, it has been reported that the shooter may have targeted the crowded Pulse nightclub because it was known to be a popular gay club. NADOHE wishes to express its support to the families and friends of all of the victims. As an organization, we condemn any act of violence that is directed at people based on personal sexual orientation or personal identity.
In addition, the shooter is identified as Muslim, and there will be those who use this tragedy as an opportunity to overgeneralize about Muslims and Islam. We hope that we can rise above this stereotyping and find peace in the midst of this horrific event.
