Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 – October 15
Each year, American observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15-October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also Columbus Day or Dia de la Raza, which is October 12, falls withing this 30 day period.

Italian American Heritage Month
October
Every year the U.S. president signs an executive order designating the month of October as National Italian American Heritage Month. Coinciding with the festivities surrounding Columbus Day, the proclamation is recognition of the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans of Italian descent as well as Italians in America.
Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group. The country was even named after an Italian, the explorer and geographer Amerigo Vespucci.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October
In 1988, Congress designated each October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The Office of Disability Employment Policy has the lead in planning NDEAM activities and materials to increase the public’s awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. Various programs carried out throughout the month also highlight the specific employment barriers that still need to be addressed and removed. This effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.

Physics Seminar: Induced Optical Magnetism and Faraday’s Law
October 6, Kemper 206
Dr. Uttam Manna of the James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago will give a talk about self-assembled metamaterials exhibiting negative refractive index These nanocluster metamaterials are formed by attaching metal nanoparticles to the surface of a dielectric core. In this kind of structure, the plasmonic resonant feature of every nano-particle induces a circulating “displacement current” around a loop, producing an artificial magnetic moment according to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. The overlapping of this artificially- induced magnetic resonance and the inherent electric resonance can produce an isotropic negative refractive index in the visible frequencies. In this seminar, Dr. Manna will discuss a unique approach for efficiently inducing strong optical magnetic resonance ?in nanocluster metamaterials.

Patrick Dobson: Canoeing the Great Plains: A Missouri River Summer
October 7 at 5:00 pm, Meyer Library 107
Patrick Dobson will discuss his new book including a discussion of river trips, aspects of his journey and the natural history of the Missouri River. Also included in the presentation are stunning pictures of the Upper Missouri Country and the lower river.
Tired of an unfulfilling life in Kansas City, Missouri, Patrick Dobson left his job and set off on foot across the Great Plains. After two and a half months, 1,450 miles, and numerous encounters with the people of the heartland, Dobson arrived in Helena, Montana. He then set a canoe on the Missouri and asked the river to carry him safely back to Kansas City, hoping this enigmatic watercourse would help reconnect him with his life. In Canoeing the Great Plains, Dobson recounts his journey on the Missouri, the country’s longest river. Dobson, a novice canoeist when he begins his trip, faces the Missouri at a time of dangerous flooding and must learn to trust himself to the powerful flows of the river and its stark and serenely beautiful countryside. He meets a cast of characters along the river who assist him both with the mundane tasks of canoeing—portaging around dams and reservoirs and finding campsites—and with his own personal transformation. Mishaps, mistakes, and misadventures plague his trip, but over time the river shifts from being a frightening adversary to a welcome companion. As the miles float by and the distinctions blur between himself and what he formerly called nature, Dobson comes to grips with his past, his fears, and his life beyond the river.

Dr. Jianlin Cheng is an associate professor in the Computer Science Department, University of Missouri at Columbia. He is affiliated with the University of Missouri Informatics Institute, the National Center for Soybean Biotechnology, the Interdisciplinary Plant Group and the Bond Life Science Center.
Musical: Dogfight
October 8 & 9 at 7:30pm, Craig Hall
It’s 1963 and, on the eve of their deployment to Vietnam, a group of tough-talking Marines spend a last rowdy night on the town in San Francisco. On the agenda: drinking, debauchery and a cruel game called “Dogfight,” in which the players each bet $50 to see who can bring the ugliest date to their party. PFC Eddie Birdlace asks Rose, a shy waitress who is an aspiring folk singer and budding pacifist. When Rose discovers the true purpose of their date, she is crushed and humiliated. But when she sees that Birdlace is genuinely remorseful, she gives him a second chance and an awkward romance unfolds. Winner of the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, Dogfight captures the violence and innocence of the era with its energetic dance numbers and wistful ballads.

While in New Mexico students hiked El Moro, Bandolier and Ghost Ranch to make en plein air images. Students will exhibit journal pages, photographs, drawings and paintings.
Biology Seminar – Pelagibacter mechanisms for surviving phosphate stress
October 9 at 4:00, Temple Hall 003
Dr. Paul Carini earned his PhD from Oregon State University where he studied the metabolism of oligotrophic marine heterotrophic bacteria. After a postdoctoral position studying marine archaea, he turned his attention to oligotrophic soil microbes. Since mid-2015 he has been studying terrestrial microbes residing deep in the soil profile as a CIRES visiting postdoctoral fellow at the University of Colorado Boulder. His seminar entitled “Pelagibacter mechanisms for surviving phosphate stress” will focus on the genetic and physiological adaptations abundant marine heterotrophic bacteria employ to maintain growth in the face of phosphate limitation. In his experiments, abundant Pelagibacter a-proteobacteria were shown to renovate polar phospholipids to reduce phosphorus content and turn to alternate P sources when P starved. When the organophosphorus compound methylphosphonate was utilized, the greenhouse gas methane was produced under oxic conditions, providing a direct link between the metabolism of oligotrophs and climate chemistry.
