Elder Mountain

A few days ago we began putting Volume 4 together.  It promises to be our biggest issue yet.  As with previous volumes, we will publish poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and visual art.  There are several book reviews in this issue as well.

As our editor, C. D. Albin often points out, Elder Mountain has a clear connection to Missouri State University-West Plains’s Ozarks Studies Symposium.  Craig asked in the early days of the Symposium why we didn’t have a journal to publish the terrific things that are presented during those two days each September, and then he went on to create one.  This year, Volume 3 contributor Steve Yates opened the Symposium at the reception Thursday, September 22.  His remarks did much to warm many hearts in that he provided praise for both projects–the Symposium and Elder Mountain.  He clearly articulated the vision those of us who began the Symposium and the journal had, and it’s nice to see that recognized.  For those of you not able to be with us, his remarks can be found on Yates’s blog,  Fiction and History.

Volume 3 of Elder Mountain:  A Journal of Ozarks Studies has arrived.  For those of you with subscriptions, they will go out in the mail today.  For others, they are available at the Drago College Store on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus.  Our biggest issue yet at 142 pages, we also think it’s one of our strongest issues.  Included are a number of works of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction.  This issue added book reviews of publications about the Ozarks.  The journal sells for $10 per copy.

This is day three of production on Elder Mountain:  A Journal of Ozarks Studies.   We anticipate printing Volume 3 the first week of June.  It’s our longest edition yet .

Among the contributors for Volume 3 are Steve Yates, author of the novel Morkan’s Quarry, and Lynn Morrow and Bonnie Stepenoff, both of whom have served as our keynote speakers for the annual Ozarks Studies Symposium here on the West Plains campus.  Another Symposium presenter, Brian C. Campbell is included as well.  Poets Dave Malone, Jane Hoogestraat, Phillip Howerton, and Amy Wright Vollmar return to this volume, and we are publishing poems by five students at the Missouri State University-Springfield campus as well as others. Material for this issue includes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, visual art, and book reviews.

We have received Volume 2 of Elder Mountain:  A Journal of Ozarks Studies.  Copies are now available from the Drago College Store, Missouri State University-West Plains’ college bookstore.  Check the Subscription tab for information on how you can get a copy–or ten.

The journal looks a little different this time.  The cover of our first volume is green, but the second volume has a lovely blue cover using the same design by Kelli Albin and created by Mat Crouse as the first volume.  The back cover photograph for the current volume is by contributor Jan Roddy.  We’re pleased with results and the excellent content within and hope you will be as well.

The second volume of Elder Mountain:  A Journal of Ozarks Studies went to the printer on Wednesday.  Within a few weeks, subscribers should begin receiving their copies.  The journal will also be on sale through the Drago College Store on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus.

As we finalize the second volume of Elder Mountain:  A Journal of Ozarks Studies, we have learned that our first volume was reviewed by New Pages.Com.

The editors began production today on Volume 2 of Elder Mountain. Among the contributors for this issue are returnees Marideth Sisco, Jan Roddy, Ryan Stone, Jane Hoogestraat, Barbara Williams, Dave Malone, and Matt Brennan.  New contributors include Anthony Priest, Amy Wright Vollmar, Duane Gilson II, Phillip Howerton, Ben Bogart, Walter Bargen, Henry Rogers, and Joanna Beth Tweedy.  Volume 2 is on track for publication over the summer.

January 31, 2010, closed out submissions for the second volume of Elder Mountain: A Journal of Ozarks Studies. The editors have begun production work on this second volume of the journal which will appear in June.

Those interested in submitting work for the third volume  have until January 31, 2011, to submit work for possible publication.  Our third volume will publish in June 2011.  Submission information and guidelines can be found by clicking on the Call for Submissions: Volume III tab above.
