Reception Launches Journal

This report comes from C. D. Albin, Elder Mountain‘s editor:

We were gratified that approximately one hundred people attended the first Elder Mountain reception and reading on Friday evening, July 24th. Poet Matthew Brennan (The Sea-Crossing of Saint Brendan, House With the Mansard Roof ) and novelist Katie Estill (Evening Would Find Me, Dahlia’s Gone) each read for an attentive, appreciative audience that included fellow contributors Jane Hoogestraat, Dave Malone, Matt Meacham, Marideth Sisco (who did double duty by singing with local band The Davis Creek Rounders), and Barbara Williams. Also attending were Ron and Mary Stone, parents of contributor Ryan Stone. We were pleased to announce that Ryan has just won the Press 53 Open Award for the Short Story.

The reception and reading were hosted by the West Plains Council on the Arts, and we owe them great thanks for their labor and support.

Announcing Elder Mountain: A Journal of Ozarks Studies

Missouri State University-West Plains has published Volume I of its new journal, Elder Mountain:  A Journal of Ozarks Studies.   Published by the Department of English and edited by Dr. Craig Albin, Elder Mountain is a juried journal that seeks to explore all aspects of the Ozarks through literature, scholarship, and the visual arts.  We publish the finest work we can obtain, believing that serious but varied views of the region aid interpretation of its complex cultural substance.

The journal’s first volume will be publicly available beginning July 24.  The subscription cost is $10 for one year or $18 for two years.
