Secretary’s Report
Blackboard Clarification
Don’t freak out when you don’t see your points from last semester on Blackboard. I simply cleared it to start fresh this semester, so it doesn’t get confusing calculating extra credit for Dr. R’s class. Please check Blackboard regularly if you attend events to make sure everything is accurate. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me! Samantha11@live.missouristate.edu.
Calendar
In an effort to save paper, I am now just posting the monthly calendar on Blackboard for your viewing pleasure. Just go to the EMA page and click calendar on the left side-bar. There will be a list of semester events at meetings.
Got an event?
Please e-mail me if you are taking part or know of an event EMA members might be interested in. I will gladly put it in the newsletter! You can also let Claire know, and she will be more than happy to let you make the announcement at meeting.
Extra Credit Reminder
To get extra credit for Dr. R’s class, you MUST be a paid member by the cutoff date (March 3rd). If you filled out an application last semester, you do not have to fill out another this semester – just pay dues.
CVB Internship
I recently got an internship with the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau. I will mainly be working on group tours and conventions coming into Springfield. The CVB will also be sending me to all the “tourist attractions” around Springfield, like Fantastic Caverns and Wilson’s Creek Battlefield. There are also some convention and tourism conferences I will have the opportunity to attend. Springfield is in a very interesting phase of tourism development right now, and if any of you have special interest in the CVB/Tourism segment of Entertainment Management, they told me they would take another intern. You really need to have a passion for this to enjoy it, so please only apply if you feel you would enjoy it and be an asset to the CVB team – not simply because you need an internship. E-mail me if you want contact information!

Marketing
Wiggio Texting
If you would like to get EMA meeting reminders via text message, get Cory your e-mail address and he will get you signed up.
Chalking
Please come out and help Cory chalk on Monday, March 14, ESPECIALLY if you are on the marketing committee. We really want to get the word out about EMA, but Cory can’t do it all by himself.  Chalkers always meet on the south side of Glass Hall at 6 p.m. the Monday before meetings.

**EMA Signature Event**
EMA now has a philanthropy! In support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks, we will be putting on a concert. Matt Long, Music Industry Rep and manager of the band Berch, is coordinating the concert. We are going to need a lot of help with this, especially with marketing. More details will come soon, but here is the info. Mark your calendars NOW!
Featuring: Berch and Cloud City (more bands TBA)
Thursday, April 28th @ The Gillioz Theatre
Matt is holding a name contest for the event, so if you have any creative ideas, please shoot him an e-mail at Long5@live.missouristate.edu. The winner will get free admission to the concert.

Trivia Question
Email me with the correct answer to get your name in a drawing for a gift-card at the end of the semester.
I auditioned for British talent show “The X Factor” twice, winning the show in its fifth series in 2008. My mother is famous musically. My songs include a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, and “Bad Boys” featuring Flo Rida. Who am I?
a. Leona Lewis

Lots of Valentine’s Love (and Events) from EMA!

Snow, Snow, Go Away! We want to have EMA!
As I’m sure you all have noticed, inclement weather has canceled our last two EMA meetings. (Boo!) But not to fear – the weather is supposed to be great next week, and guess what? WE HAVE AN EMA MEETING! Here are the details: February 16 @ 5 p.m., Glass 230. We will be having a speaker, Kathy Vicat from O’Reilly Family Events Center (who we were supposed to have the last two weeks). She has been nice enough to reschedule with us THREE times, so please be there to make her trouble worth her while and learn a lot of valuable information.

Dues are due!
As a reminder, Shawn will be collecting dues at our February 16 meeting. In order to be considered a member in good standing and to get extra credit in Dr. R’s class, you must be paid by this time. Remember, dues can easily be paid via PayPal on the EMA Facebook page. There is a link to it from our Blackboard site, if you aren’t already an EMA “friend.” Dues are $20 for returning members and $35 for new members, if you pay online. If you choose to pay by check or cash, dues will be $23 and $38, respectively. Paying online makes the transaction process much smoother and helps us be environmentally friendly.

Points Clarification
If you access the Gradecenter on Blackboard, you will notice that all of last semester’s points have been cleared. This doesn’t mean you have lost credit for the events you attended – it just means the Gradecenter was getting hard to maneuver, and it was easier to start fresh with the recording. Don’t worry – we still know if you’ve participated. Please don’t hesitate to contact Samantha at samantha11@live.missouristate.edu if you have any specific questions.
For those in Dr. R’s classes, don’t forget to get 3 points for each meeting you attend, and 3 points for each outside EMA event you attend, and 1 point for chalking. Those points might be really helpful at the end of the semester, so take advantage of them.

Tours and Speakers
Due to events beyond our control, the Shrine Mosque tour has been postponed. Matt is working to reschedule it, as well as getting other tours and speakers in the works. A speaker from the Career Center will be coming to help us with resumes, and there will definitely be a trip this semester. If you have any ideas for speakers or potential tours we could take, please let Matt Perry know.

Upcoming Social
Thursday, February 17, we will be having a Trivia Night for EMA members in PSU. The event will take place at 5 p.m., in a room TBA. There will be lots of food and fun! (And I just want to warn you, I was the academic team captain in high school, so I’m looking for some good competition!) We encourage everyone to come out to the socials because they’re fun, and it’s a great time to get to know other EMA members on a not-so-formal-meeting type atmosphere. Don’t forget that it’s the relationships you make that will ultimately help you in your future career.

Chalking
Cory Thomas, our Marketing chair, chalks for our meetings on the Monday before every meeting. It goes a lot faster for him if he has help, and helps spread the word about EMA to those who haven’t been lucky enough to find EM as a major yet! Please consider coming out to help him with this. It doesn’t take long at all, and you get an extra point for Dr. R’s class. Cory meetings chalkers at 6 p.m. on the south side of Glass. The next chalking adventure will be Monday, February 14, at 6 p.m. You should have plenty of time to get your chalking done before your Valentine’s date!

Fundraising
Ovations is giving us ONE MORE CHANCE! We are volunteering in the Hiland Dairy/Starbucks stand at the Missouri State Lady Bears’ game on February 27.  Please contact Whitney Morelock if you are able to volunteer. We are also in the process of setting up at Bambino’s Night.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Philanthropy
Matt Long, our Music Industry Rep, is coordinating the first ever EMA Philanthropy Fundraiser Event. This event will be a concert put on by various (GOOD) local bands at the Gillioz Theatre.  The event will take place on Thursday, April 28. Mark your calendars now! Matt will have more details shortly, but for now we just need a NAME for the event. If you have any ideas, please email Matt at Long5@live.missouristate.edu. He will also be asking for suggestions at meeting.

Upcoming Area Events:
February 11: Valentine’s Day Massacre @ The Skinny Improv. 10 p.m. The Massacre at the Skinny Improv provides the audience with a new, positive, and funny perspective on the break up stories that they generously share. The performers take their break up stories and reenact them on stage, adding a special twist.  Tickets are $5.

-April 27th

Chalking Adventures
Chalking will always take place the Monday before meetings. We really need to get the word out about EMA this semester. Cory Thomas will meet chalkers on the south side of glass at 6 p.m. Please do this to help EMA grow! (You get extra credit.) Dates are as follows:

-January 31st
-February 14th
-March 2nd
-March 14th
-March 28th
-April 11th

Event Recap
Right before break, many students visited the O’Reilly Family Events Center at Drury University for a tour. Some items discussed were the load-in process, staffing, event capabilities, and pros and cons of the building. Over Winter Break, a number of students, along with friends and family, attended a St. Louis Blues game. EMA was given a “backstage” tour and met with the Director of Operations, who spoke about event preparation, game preparation, and his duties. The group was also able to meet with a group sales director, who is actually a Missouri State Entertainment Management graduate. We learned about her work in suites, managing groups, and customer relations. We encourage you to take part in tours like this in the future. As everyone probably knows by now, it’s all about networking!

Cancellation Policy
Last semester we had many problems with members signing up for events and then either 1) not showing up, or 2) cancelling at the last minute. We understand life happens and things come up, but when EMA cannot fulfill our expected duties our reputation is tarnished. What was once our greatest fundraiser, Ovations food service, is now becoming a last resort (and not by choice). In response, we are asking for notice 48 hours before an event if you find you cannot attend. Please notify the chairperson who headed the event. It is possible that the chairperson will ask you to find a replacement, so early notification is encouraged. Remember, one person’s actions reflect on the entire organization.

Position Openings
Ready to get involved with EMA or thinking of being on next year’s leadership team? Here’s your chance! Because our Social Media Coordinator and Sports Industry Representative both accepted exciting internships with Disney, those positions are now open. Please contact President Claire Walker or another officer if you are interested. (All leadership team contact information can be found on Blackboard.)

SOFAC Requirements
Occasionally, we will have trips for which you can get SOFAC funding from Missouri State. Usually the monies come in the form of a reimbursement after the trip is over. If you want to be eligible for SOFAC funding, please note that you must complete 2 SERVICE, 2 SOCIAL, 2 FUNDRAISING, and 2 TOURS/SPEAKERS during the semester. Completion of these eight requirements is also necessary to be considered a member in good standing.  Note – points for these do not roll over from semester to semester; however, you do have the entire semester to complete your requirements no matter when the trip takes place. You each have a grade book account on Blackboard, so please reference your points to know where you stand. Otherwise, feel free to contact Secretary Samantha Hogenson with questions. Take advantage of the opportunities we are providing to ensure you meet requirements.

Service Opportunities on the Radar
-Sertoma Chili Cook-off: February 19. More details to come at following meetings.
-Relay for Life: April 8-9. EMA is having a team! There is no size limit, so all can participate!

Fundraising
OVATIONS IS GIVING US ONE MORE CHANCE! We are signed up to work the Lady Bear’s Basketball Game on Sunday, February 27. Meeting time is 12 PM. We need six people to work, so please contact our new Fundraising Chair, Whitney Morelock, if interested.
Also, if you have any fundraising ideas we want to hear them! Whitney would like to get a better mix of events than we have had in the past, so we are open to any suggestions.

Tours & Speakers
Speaker – February 2nd: Kathy Vicat, Event Coordinator at O’Reilly Family Events Center. Kathy will be speaking at our next EMA meeting, so please be in attendance so we can learn from her and give her a good audience. 5 p.m., Glass 250.

Committee
Committee assignments roll over from last semester. If you are unhappy with the committee on which you serve, please fill out a new committee sheet at the next meeting. Those who are new and filled out committee sheets at the last meeting have been assigned a committee. You should be receiving an email from your committee head soon.

Blackboard – It’s Important to YOU!
Most questions asked of the leadership team can be answered with reference to Blackboard. We are always happy to answer your questions, but if you need immediate answers Blackboard will be your fastest option. From Blackboard you can reference leader contact information, a monthly calendar, documents, meeting PowerPoints, announcements, our constitution, by-laws, and point information.

Job Opportunity
Two house manager positions have opened at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. House managers work the front of house operations during all shows at the Hall. Hours aren’t fixed – house managers work when there is a show. This may be 6 shows per house manager one month or 11 the next. Working in one of these positions is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience and network. Pick up an application at the administrative front desk at Juanita K. Hammons Hall. Hiring will preferably take place before the end of January, so new house managers can be trained during the Broadway tour of Beauty and the Beast. Because we’ve had many house managers graduating and have a few graduations coming, freshman and sophomores are preferred, but all students are encouraged to apply. On a personal note, it helps to have a passion for or interest in theatre to fill this position. Please contact me, Samantha Hogenson, if you have questions.

Wiggio
Want to be reminded of EMA meetings via text? That’s now a possibility. Please contact marketing chair Cory Thomas if you would like to have this service.

It’s that time again, and dues are due! In order to receive extra credit and be a member in good standing, dues must be paid by the February 16 meeting. You are also ineligible to go on trips if you are not a paid member. Dues go toward tours, speakers, activities, food, etc. New members also get an EMA polo included in the price. Prices are as follows:

-Returning Members- $20 via PayPal, link on Facebook ($23 via check/cash)
-New Members- $35 via PayPal, ($38 via check/cash)

What do you want to do in the Entertainment Industry?: I am excited that there are so many opportunities in this industry, so as of right now, I am keeping my options open. Ultimately, I would like to work in the hotel/resort industry as an event planner. Specifically, I would love to plan weddings!
A worthwhile EM experience you have had: There are so many to choose from, but I would have to say that one that really was beneficial for me was taking Dr. Goss’s MGT 412 class. It was a hands-on experience that gave me a taste of what it is really like to work in the industry. I got such an adrenaline rush from this experience, and I know that I am entering the right industry!
Interesting fact: I really enjoy decorating, especially around this time of year.

If you are still in need of service hours this semester, Kelsey is offering an easy way to make your mark. If you bring three articles of clothing (if in a pair, only counts as 1) or five cans of food, you can get a service hour.  You can get up to two service hours for this clothing/food drive.

Member Profile

Name: Nicole Clement
Year in School: Senior–woooohoo!
What did you do last summer?: I was one of two Marketing/PR Interns at the St. Charles Convention Center. The other intern was Bryan Kennedy, also an EM major.
What do you hope to do with your Entertainment Management degree?:  I’m still trying to finalize what exactly I want to do. But ideally, I would love to be a Special Events Planner or Director of Special Events at a prestigious venue.
What advice do you have for others regarding EM through your experiences?:  Don’t rule out anything. Keep all of your options open and make connections and network. I am still amazed at how true the statement “it’s not what you know but who you know” is.

IAVM Professional Members Open Doors for IAVM Student Members from Region III

Missouri State University Student Members of IAVM were doing more than talking about entertainment management when they recently toured several venues in San Diego. Brad Gessner, General Manager of the San Diego Convention Center, spent time with students discussing some of the types of events that go on at their venue.  During their visit, the center was hosting the American Society of Anesthesiologists Convention and they were fortunate enough to witness a live load-in and set-up of the annual educational meeting hosting thousands of anesthesiologist from across the world. The San Diego CC has over one million square feet of meeting space; all of it was being used for the current convention.

Other venues toured were the Balboa Theatre, San Diego State’s Viejas Arena, and Petco Park. Each venue had a unique piece of San Diego history that was incorporated in the venue. The experiences and knowledge the students obtained were brought back and shared with members of the Entertainment Management Association – affiliated with a student chapter of IAVM.
