It’s officially Fall, and EMA has a lot coming up!

Newsletter:  Volume 6, Issue 3
October 1, 2010

TWO WEEK CALENDAR:
Saturday, October 2 – Fundraising event at the MSU football concession stand. If you are working, be there at 11 a.m. in appropriate attire. (You should have received an email from Christina if signed up to work.)
Monday, October 4 – Tour of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Meet at the back of Glass Hall at 5 p.m. to carpool. We will have dinner there and watch a movie on the big screen after the tour!
Wednesday, October 6 – EMA Meeting. 5-6:15 pm, Glass 108.
Saturday, October 9 – St. John’s Sunshine Run (Service). Contact Kelsey Walters for details.
Thursday, October 14 – Saturday, October 16 – National Trip to San Diego!

I would like to extend a big THANK YOU from the EM Officers and Dr. Rothschild to all who came out to the Stakeholder’s Meeting. We appreciate your dedication to the Entertainment Management program and the value each of you add to the organization. Thank you for helping to make the event a success!

NATIONAL TRIP UPDATE!
Now that Fall has set in, you might be wishing for some warmer weather. Wish no longer! Set your mind to… Some Beach… in San Diego!
The attractions have been finalized for the national trip. We will be visiting Balboa Theatre, Petco Park (MLB’s San Diego Padres play there), Viejas Arena, Signature Studios, and San Diego Convention Center. If you are going on the trip and have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Matt Perry.

SOFAC funding, anyone? LET’S RAISE SOME FUNDS!
I KNOW everyone wants money for trips like Poll-Star and the Super bowl! Don’t miss a chance to volunteer to work at the Ovations Concession Stand during the football game on October 30. The shift will start at noon. That weekend is Showcase weekend for Missouri State, so there will be a big crowd!
In a recent conversation with Randy Blackwood, Director of Athletic and Entertainment Venues for Missouri State, he stressed to me just how important it is for a venue or event manager to understand what goes in to managing concessions. You don’t want to order too much, or there is spoilage. You don’t want to order too little, or you risk losing a patron. Take this opportunity to help Christina and EMA out and take time to learn the concession ropes. We need LOTS of people to sign up, so please contact Christina as soon as possible.

Eager to put on your dancing shoes?
Dance Bear-A-Thon will be held Oct. 8-9 in Hammons Student Center. Games, fun, food, and dancing! It’s the best 12 hours of your life you’ll ever live! Dance all night, and the proceeds benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. Dance Bear-A-Thon is committed to establishing a relationship between Children’s Miracle Network of CoxHealth and Missouri State University. This event will promote children’s health and happiness through student leadership and enjoyment, increasing involvement by the University community and laying the foundation for a future tradition. Raise money, or just come out to support. Contact the Office of Student Engagement for information.

For all aspects of entertainment management…. Crowd Management is important! Kyle Adams, our Venue Rep, would like to invite you to attend this great event:
International Crowd Management Conference held by IAAM
November 7-10, 2010
Kansas City, MO
Featuring Disney Institute Nov 9

MEMBER PROFILES:
Introducing, Svetlana Avellan
- I currently a junior at MSU.
- This last summer I went to Eureka Springs for my first time, I bought a pet bunny, who is my official first pet. I also started a new hobby, which is hoola-hoop dancing. I really enjoy it, it’s definitely a workout, and it’s fun.
- As far as my major goes, I plan to get an internship within a music industry and hopefully move to California and pursue my career there.
- I guess the most interesting fact about me is that I was born in Russia, moved to America when I was 12 and have lived in MO since. I am bilingual and I do speak semi-good Spanish, so it’s an advantage for me as well as my future.

Introducing, Stephanie Quinn
Year in School: Senior
What did you do this summer?: I did an internship with the St Louis Blues and Scottrade Canter and loved it.
What you hope to do with your major?: I used to want to work for any baseball team, but after my internship I think working for a hockey team would be great too. I want to end up in the sports venue industry somehow.
Interesting Fact: I am pretty much obsessed with the St Louis Cardinals and went to 15 games this summer, which still wasn’t enough!

TRIVIA
If you answer the following trivia question correctly, your name will be entered in a drawing for a Starbucks gift card at the end of the semester. Email me your answers by the next meeting, which is October 6. For those of you who answered the trivia question last time, I haven’t forgotten about you! Because you answered the inaugural newsletter trivia question, you will all get a small prize at the October 6 meeting.

The question is: Who is the Missouri State Bear’s all-time leading scorer for women’s basketball? How many points did she have?

Member Profile
Introducing…. Chris Folk!

Name: Chris Folk
Year: Senior
What do you ultimately hope to do with your major?: Having grown up around Major League Baseball, I would like to work for a MLB team after graduation.  The Entertainment Management program, in my opinion, has prepared me adequately for achieving my career goals to this point.
What did you do this summer?: During the summer of 2010 I had the opportunity to work for the Tampa Bay Rays, a Major League Baseball team in St. Petersburg, Florida.  I worked in the Stadium Operations Department, which is responsible for the execution of all events within, and surrounding, Tropicana Field.  I was exposed both to baseball events (Rays games) and non-baseball events (e.g. Baseball Showcases, Home Shows, Concerts, Benefits, etc).  Having the opportunity to learn from the Rays, a first class organization, was a privilege and the takeaways I have from the experience, both tangible and intangible, will be both beneficial and memorable for future opportunities.
Interesting fact: In addition to the entertainment (specifically sport) industry, I enjoy building web sites and web applications; the system being utilized by EMA is something I built the infrastructure for.  Additionally, I have been a part of multiple web projects including my own systems I have built for youth sport teams and organizations.

MORE DETAIL: During our trip to San Diego we will be touring:

4)San Diego Convention Center will discuss the many events that go on at their facility, as well as a tour

The total cost of this trip will be between $150-$175 to EMA. This covers our tour fees, rental van costs and your hotel room for 3 nights. I can’t give a specific price right now because I don’t have an exact number of people who are 100 percent committed. However, you will be required to buy your own plane ticket, which right now is running at $230 out of Kansas City, $210 out of St. Louis, and $410 out of Springfield. I am having everyone do it by themselves because your family may have some free flights or frequent flier miles available. In addition, you will be required to bring enough money for yourself to eat/drink while we are there.
