The Missouri State University 2009 Senior Class Gift Commission announced its plans to begin a new tradition with its donation of three flagpoles to display outside JQH Arena and a senior class flag to be flown exclusively on commencement days.
In addition to the gift, the commission plans to include a plaque on the center pole which recognizes the academic 2008-09 senior class as contributors to the flagpoles. To continue the senior class flag tradition, future graduating classes may fund their own flag to fly during commencement ceremonies.
“The commission decided on the flagpoles because this [academic] year’s seniors are the first class to graduate in JQH Arena. We decided to start a tradition by creating a class flag,” said Krystal Dreher, senior class president and chair of the Senior Class Gift Commission.
The total cost of the flagpoles is approximately $8,000. Seniors, including those who graduated in December 2008, are asked to contribute to the gift by making a donation of $25 to the 2009 Senior Class Gift Fund. In return for their gift, seniors receive a Missouri State active alumni card and a token of appreciation.
“The commission plans on more fundraising campaigns this semester to meet the $8,000 goal,” Dreher noted. To date, the commission has received 66 gifts providing a net total of $1,630 in donations. Last year’s class raised approximately $7,000.
The 2009 Senior Class Gift Commission is composed of 11 senior students: Ryan Childress, John Coleman, Alyssa Como, Krystal Dreher, Valerie Levin, Whitney Paul, Travis Randolph, Natalie Robertson, Ashley Schetter, Chris Triplett and Jenny West. Two junior class members, Lauren Corte and Courtney Wendel, also are representatives to the commission.
