Tom DeWitt helped us evaluate soil pits on August 11 in order to see if a particular site would accommodate a vineyard or if modifications, like berming down the row, were necessary. Luckily the site preferred by Dr. Hwang for his grapes proved to be a good prospect for grape production – at least a 2 foot deep rooting zone and good internal water drainage since the fragipan in these pits was weak. Dr. Sara Lancaster, Jennifer Morganthaler and Jeremy Emery helped with the evaluation. The pits will remain open for Dr. Lancaster’s class to come out and evaluate as well.
