Edward Snowden stole highly classified documents from the NSA with the help of a regular thumb drive.
U.S. officials said that they know how many documents he downloaded and what server he took them from, The LA Times reports.
As with all organizations that deal with classified information, flash drives are supposedly banned from the NSA headquarters.
However, Snowden went unnoticed. He worked as a system administrator, a job that gave him access to NSA computer networks and also an understanding as to how the networks are monitored for unauthorized downloads.
“Of course, there are always exceptions. There are people who need to use a thumb drive and they have special permission,” a former NSA official said.
Edward Snowden, the man behind the PRISM leak, is subject to an ongoing criminal investigation, FBI Director Robert Mueller III said.
