Learning Commons
Building for the Future

Learning Commons Committee Meeting – March 2, 2009

Group agreed on 9:00 on Mondays for future meetings.

Common ideas

  1. Learning commons includes academic support
  2. Vision = opportunity to integrate academic support – (writing center, tutoring) Writing Center to move to library.
  3. Integrate with work in library – research, multimedia, etc.
  4. Library is the heart, expands from there.  Media is heavily developed and will integrate with learning commons.

Actions

  1. Form sub-committee for students.  Learning commons should double academic support and use of library.
  2. Sub-Committee = How to integrate Services
  3. Sub-Committee = Issues of furniture, what to order etc.  Different types of furniture.  Doug Simpson could help with design of space.  Learning commons are strong in libraries.  Multimedia is a key player in learning commons.
  4. Sub-committee – Kevin and Joe are to send distribution list to Rachelle– start right away.

Other observations

  1. The Learning Center as a big room without special design.
  2. Tutoring this summer – several places to meet in library – design the space to the function.
  3. Space and website = sub-committee for website use.  Use new MSU blog until we have developed our own website.  We have Student Development Website.
  4. Learning commons is good for face-to-face interaction.
  5. Let the students make the path and then pave the way.

The next meeting Monday, March 16 at 9 a.m. will meet in Library 209 and tour the library space suitable for learning commons.
