GMAT’s New Integrated Reasoning Section

H/T Clear Admit: http://blog.clearadmit.com/2012/05/gmat-tips-relative-math/

As you may know, the Next Generation GMAT comes out June 5. One “major” change to the GMAT is to the Integrated Reasoning section. This section will emphasize more “relative math,” that is, math that doesn’t require more than an estimate to solve the problem.

The GMAT tests speed more than intelligence.  We seek the ability to solve problems based on limited information, a short timeframe, and logic applied from past experience.  That’s why the GMAT values this skill so highly in determining the quantitative subscore.

Once the GMAT rolls out its prep materials for the Next Generation GMAT, we’ll be hard at work covering the things you should know to get admitted to our program.  Our goal is that you know what it takes to get admitted to our program.

JobTracks is now FREE!

The Career Center has announced that as of May 1st, JobTracks is completely free.  There is no longer a $20 charge for full-access to JobTracks.  Students, however, do need to sign a consent form to upload their resumes onto JobTracks.  Employers often ask for resume books and this is a great way for you to get your resume out to employers.

How to Find an Internship

How Do I Find an Internship?
(Taken from the Spring 2012 Career Center Newsletter)

The most effective internship searches use a variety of different search strategies. A great place to start is the Career
Center website, www.careercenter.missouristate.edu. The Career Center lists dozens of new internships every semester
on JobTracks, where you can search your interests by keyword, job title, or industry just to name a few. Also, take advantage of all your networking opportunities. Attend Mock Interview days, Career Expos, and Networking Events to meet employers who may be looking for interns. While a great deal of information is available, you must be persistent in your internship search. Start early and seek help from a career counselor. Have a plan that includes a great résumé and cover letter, appropriate follow-up, and good record keeping. Be prepared, open-minded, flexible, and professional with everyone you meet because you may never know who will be able to influence your internship search.

When Is a Good Time to Start Looking for an Internship?

An internship can be attained any time in your college career. However, most often the Career Center suggests students apply for their first internship during their sophomore year. The Career Center receives internship listings continually. It’s best to begin your internship search the semester before your desired placement. That way, you’ll have time to respond to listed positions and initiate contacts on your own as well. Lead time can give you a competitive edge when it comes to composing an effective cover letter or tailoring your résumé to a desired internship.

Can I Get Academic Credit for My Internship?

You may be able to get academic credit for your internship. However, only academic departments can offer credit, and
policies differ from one department to the next. Often your internship must relate directly to your major and will require you to complete a substantial research project or writing component as part of special studies course. For more information, talk with the head of your department or the internship advisor.

Friday update

I received an interesting email yesterday regarding increases in graduate enrollment through 2020. What struck me was the following quote:

Business Man

Image via Creative Commons from flickr user planetina

“According to BLS’ projections, the number of jobs typically requiring a doctorate or a professional degree for entry is projected to increase by 20% between 2010 and 2020, and the number typically requiring a master’s degree for entry is expected to grow by 22% (Sommers & Franklin, 2012).” – Nathan E. Bell, Director, Research and Policy Analysis, Council of Graduate Schools (emphasis mine)

Masters degrees, especially the MBA, are growing in strength and in popularity. What sets you apart when you complete an MSU MBA?

- Connections from all over the world. Our candidates represent 32 different countries as of the last (spring 2012) intake.
- A degree from a well-recognized university and college of business. Missouri State is consistently rated as a “Best School” in the Princeton Review. Our College of Business Administration is accredited by the AACSB, which puts in the top 10 percent of schools nationally.

If you’re ready to embark with us starting in the fall 2012 semester, tour our website and apply for our program today!
