Fall – Match of the Quarter

Missouri Mentoring Partnership is happy to announce our Match of the Quarter is a Worksite Program match located at McDonald’s! This McDonald’s location is a new business partner this year and we could not be happier to be working with them. We are pleased to recognize our Match of the Quarter, Melissa and her mentee. Melissa is the general manager at this McDonald’s location. Her and her mentee have been matched for over four months and both have great things to say about each other.

In this time the mentee has already received a performance raise and has been trained in multiple areas of the store making him a trusted asset to the team at McDonalds. His hard work and dedication to his job has really caught the eye of his worksite mentor.

Melissa has had this to say about him recently, “He has come a long way since his first day with us and we feel that he is really made a smooth transition to becoming a valued part of the team here at McDonald’s. He gets along really well with everyone and is respectful to staff, his leadership team, and most of all the customers that come in to the store. There is always things that we can work on to help him improve, but overall he is doing a good job so far.”

Our worksite participant had this to say about how having Melissa as his mentor and how having her support has helped him feel more comfortable at his job. “Mel is an awesome person to talk to and helps me when I have a problem at work, she helps me to become the best worker that I can be and pushes me to do my best every day.”

This match’s dedication to the mentoring relationship is the main factor in its success, and their awesome example embodies all of the goals and values of MMP’s Worksite Mentoring Component. We couldn’t be happier with this match. Congratulations to them both!

February Match of the Month!

MMP is proud to announce that the Match of the Month for February is a pair from our Young Parent program! Within MMP’s Young Parent program, young parents are given the opportunity to begin a mentored relationship with someone in the community to help provide them guidance, encouragement, support, and friendship. Our program asks that the mentor and mentee meet at least an hour a week together in activities that both the mentor and mentee can agree on. These activities include anything from trips to the park with the young parent’s child, or just talking one-on-one between mentor and mentee. While choosing this month’s match, MMP staff agreed that Kasey Spencer and her mentee showed a great bond early on in their match. This is why they have been chosen as our match of the month!

Kasey Spencer is a graduate student at Missouri State University in the Social Work program. In her free time, Kasey enjoys spending time with her friends and family and she is also active in her church. Though she maintains a busy schedule of working at the Counseling and Testing Center and at Boys and Girls Town; Kasey always makes sure she includes time for her mentee. Though they have only been matched for three months, Kasey stated that they are very close and connected rather quickly from the very beginning of their match. Kasey shared with MMP that she feels like she and her mentee are very comfortable with each other and they always look forward to their “girl talk” and having fun together. Kasey stated that she loves being a mentor and explained the satisfaction she feels knowing the difference she is making in her mentee’s life. She enjoys the feeling of knowing that her mentee understands that she can always depend on her. Kasey also recognizes the benefits that she has gotten through this mentor relationship. She stated, “being a mentor means I need to set an example. Being her mentor holds me accountable to making good decisions and to demonstrate a healthy lifestyle.”

Kasey’s mentee shadowed the positive feelings of her mentor. She shared with MMP that she considers Kasey more like a best friend rather than a formal mentor. She stated that she feels thankful to be matched with someone who she can talk to about anything. This MMP participant told staff that she is noticing that her issues with anger have improved because she can now talk to Kasey and get her feelings off of her chest instead of bottling them like she would in the past. Her mentee also raved about how well Kasey has gotten along with her daughter. She laughed as she shared that every time her daughter sees Kasey, she runs up to her to sit on her lap. Just recently, Kasey’s mentee shared with staff that she and her fiancé have set a date for their wedding day. As soon as they set the date; Kasey was asked by her mentee to be her Maid of Honor on her special day. Her mentee stated that Kasey is her closest friend here so it just made sense to have her there on this day.

MMP staff asked both of these participants to give light to their secret of creating such a positive mentoring relationship. Both mimicked each other in stating that trust is the key. Kasey added that being open and honest with your mentee will allow them to feel comfortable with being open and honest with you in return.

MMP is honored that we have been a part in watching this friendship develop. Both Kasey and her mentee are what our program is all about, and it is our goal to soon have success stories such as this one for many new matches to come! Congrats ladies!

Baby Store!

After months of planning event details, organizing diaper donations, and sorting generous contributions of children’s clothing; MMP’s Baby Store was a huge success! Baby Store is an event that Missouri Mentoring Partnership holds twice a year that allows our young parents to shop in our office to spend the Baby Bucks they have earned. From spending time with their mentors, to attending parenting classes; each activity completed by our young parents is worth a certain amount of Baby Bucks. After their totals are formulated, our young parents are free to shop for diapers, wipes, children’s clothing, safety items, toys, hygiene products, children’s bedding, and much more.

On December 5th, all of MMP’s preparation paid off as we watched our clients walk out with over $817 in Baby Bucks worth of essential items for their children that they had earned by participating in our program. This amazing event would not have been possible without our dedicated staff, participants, mentors, and donors. Again, thank you to everyone who made this day possible!

October Match of the Month!

MMP is proud to announce that the Match of the Month for October is a pair from our Young Parent program! While choosing this month’s match, MMP was unanimous when deciding that this recognition should go to Theresa Bettmann and her mentee.

Theresa and her Young Parent participant have been matched for over a year and they both agree that they have a great, open, and fun relationship. Theresa’s mentee shared with MMP that having Theresa as a mentor has helped direct her life in a better way. She has seen improvements in her child as well, and indicated that he has opened up much more. She stated that she, and her child, love spending time with Theresa because they have a very open relationship that is full of fun and laughter. Her advice for other mentees in creating a positive relationship includes the importance of staying open with mentors. She recommended mentees to not hesitate to admit when they need help, when they have a question, or when they just need to talk.

Theresa fully agreed with her mentee about their relationship. She said that working as a mentor with MMP has given her life a different and new perspective on single parenting. She shared that this relationship has given her hope to see a young, single mother and how great of a job she is doing with parenting. As a single mother herself, she sees how her mentee’s display of parenting can give hope to other single mothers that this job can be done, and done well.  When asked about the advice she would give other mentors on creating a positive mentoring relationship, she stated that it was not always about giving advice. She believes that sometimes it is more important to just listen. Listen to their needs, their desires, and theirs dreams and try to figure out how you being a part of their life can help make these things happen.

MMP is so thankful to have this Match of the Month as a part of our program because their fun, supportive, and mutual friendship is what our Young Parent program is all about. We look forward to watching this match’s friendship grow for many years to come!

September Match of the Month!

MMP is proud to announce that our Match of the Month for September is a Worksite Match located at Mr. Hot Shine’s Car Wash! Within our Worksite program, our youth is given the opportunity to apply for positions with our business partners. Once at these worksites, our MMP participants are provided an onsite mentor to help them navigate their position in order to succeed. Mr. Hot Shine’s Car Wash is one of our current business partners. Brandon, General Manager at Mr. Hot Shine’s, has worked here, and other similar locations, for over 17 years. He and his mentee have been matched for four months and they both had great things to say about their mentoring relationship. Brandon stated that he and his mentee meet for the required thirty minutes a week and they have developed a great friendship. Brandon shared how much he appreciates how his mentee comes into work with a smile on his face, always ready to work.

His mentee feels like having a mentor at Mr. Hot Shine’s Car Wash has helped him a lot while on the job. Brandon has not only been someone that he feels like he can talk to, but he has also become a friend. He shared that he loves his job and that he has fun working each of his shifts. Brandon’s mentee believes that the key to a positive mentoring relationship is to start off by talking with your mentor and actually listen to their advice that they give you in order to learn. After that, he feels like it is important that you give your own suggestions and ask questions when needed.

Brandon enjoys being a mentor with MMP because he can see how their relationship is benefiting his mentee.  He stated that he also can see how our program has opened his eyes, and his staff’s eyes, to the help that people can provide individuals in the community.

MMP is very happy and thankful for the positive influence that Brandon has had on his mentee. It has been great watching this relationship grow as Brandon has helped this MMP participant learn and succeed at his position at Mr. Hot Shine’s. We look forward to witnessing this mentee’s continued dedication, and Brandon’s supportive guidance for many months to come!

What is MMP?

MMP stands for Missouri Mentoring Partnership. The Missouri Mentoring Partnership prepares youth ages 16-21 for personal success in employment, education, healthy life styles, and self-sufficiency through mentored support. MMP offers two areas of mentored support through the Young Parent program and the Worksite Program. The Young Parent Program provides resources in the hopes to increase parenting skills, increase immunization for the children of our young parents, promote the continuing of education, and to prevent a second unplanned pregnancy. The Worksite Program strives to help youth find a job, provides mentored support in order to maintain a job, and promotes the continuation of education.

Mentored support throughout both of these programs is MMP’s main goal and we find it crucial in providing all of the necessary resources and help when needed by the youth in our program. If you are interested in becoming a mentor within MMP, please visit our website at www.missourimentoringpartnership.org or give us a call at (417) 836-3134.
