Dr. Sara Henary presented “Nature and Convention in Locke’s Political Philosophy” at the Hobbes and Locke roundtable sponsored by the Rothermere American Institute at University of Oxford on May 5, 2016. With Locke’s education at Christ Church and Hobbes’ study at Hertford, the colleges of Oxford represent a touchstone for modern political philosophy; similar to Dr. Heanry’s earlier trip to Plymouth, MA.
Dr. Henary is pictured at the Locke memorial stone in Christ Church Cathedral. Also pictured are Locke statue in Christ Church Library, view from the tower of University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, and stained glass in University Church of St. Mary the Virgin.
And until Peter Jackson makes a movie based on the Second Treatise or, more likely, Leviathan, Oxford may be better known as the home of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. Dr. Henary is pictured at their favorite Oxford gathering spot, the Eagle and Child. A touchstone of another sort.
