Dr. Ashley Leinweber attended 59th annual meeting of the African Studies Association in Washington, DC last week. The 2016 conference theme was Imagining Africa at the Center: Bridging Scholarship, Policy, and Representation in African Studies. Dr. Leinweber chaired a panel on Contested Politics, Histories and Identities in Congolese Borderlands and presented a paper entitled “Maniema’s Muslim Borderland: Interaction and Isolation within and Beyond Eastern Congo.”
Dr. Leineweber is pictured holding Islamic Education in Africa from Indiana University Press, a 2016 book that includes her chapter “The New Muslim Public School in the Democratic Republic of Congo.” Ashley is also pictured with Dr. Lina Benabdallah, an MGS alum who defended her dissertation last month at University of Florida.
