2016 Political Science alumni, Michael Jones, is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher currently working in Anyang, South Korea.
As an English Teacher at the Hanslang Foreign Language Institute I teach multiple ESL classes to elementary and middle school age students. I teach eight classes – five to kindergarten and elementary age kids on M, W, F and three to middle school students on T, Tr. I’ve been enjoying the work thus far and discovered I have somewhat of a passion for teaching.
In my lessons I cover everything from basic phonics, reading, and writing to more intermediate usages of vocabulary and grammar. I also teach the most advanced students topics such as essay writing, public speaking, and debate.
Being an ESL teacher is a great way for recent graduates who want to travel to work and earn some valuable experience while doing so. It’s also a good way to save money if someone is considering grad school. The requirements for every country are different, but most places in Asia simply require a Bachelor’s degree and that you be a native speaker from an English speaking country. If you have any students that would like to know more about this opportunity, feel free to send them my way.
I recently finished the 360 mile Four Rivers Bike Trail during spring vacation. I cycled all the way from Seoul to Busan over the course of five days.
