Dr. Dennis Hickey, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Master’s in Global Studies at Missouri State University, delivered a guest lecture focusing on Taiwan’s policy in the South China Sea dispute to an overflow crowd at the State University of New York at Cortland on November 5. He explained why Taiwan, arguably the most isolated state in the world, occupies the best piece of real estate in the South China Sea (Taiping Island) and why both Washington and Beijing are pushing Taipei to change its policies (in opposite directions). His lecture also covered late breaking developments including the summit meeting between President Ma of the Republic of China on Taiwan and President Xi of the People’s Republic of China. In recent days, he has been interviewed by The People’s Daily, China News Service and China Review News Agency of Hong Kong about the historic meeting.
