Today I discuss our responsibility, as ethical citizens, to exercise our right to vote.
Election will have impact on city and University
Today is Election Day. If you live inside the city limits of Springfield, there are several important matters for you to decide. You can vote for school board members, city council members and mayor, and on whether to repeal the expansion of the city of Springfield’s nondiscrimination ordinance to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
School board election important to University
It is important to the university who sits on the school board and who makes policy for Springfield since we interact with the school system and the city regularly. The Springfield News Leader, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the National Education Association (NEA) have evaluated all five candidates for school board and endorsed the same three candidates. You can read about the News Leaders’ endorsement, the Chamber’s endorsement and the NEA’s endorsement.
City candidates, issues also impact Missouri State
You can learn about all of the candidates for mayor and city council.
The most important measure on the ballot may be the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance. A “no” vote is to support retention of the current ordinance which added sexual orientation and gender identity to the classes of people who are protected from discrimination in housing and employment. The Missouri State University Faculty Senate, Staff Senate and Student Government Association have all passed resolutions encouraging their constituencies to vote “no” on this measure.
However you feel about the candidates or this issue, I encourage you to vote. It is part of what an ethical citizen does.
Thank you for all you do for Missouri State University.
