University remains committed to liberal arts
Missouri State enjoys a proud history. Founded in 1905 as a normal school with a primary purpose of preparing teachers for the public school systems, the institution added the word “college” to its name 1945. This change indicated the school’s expansion beyond teacher education to liberal arts and sciences.
Since 1945 we have remained committed to a broad-based liberal arts and education foundation. This commitment is embedded in our diverse program offerings, our general education curriculum and in the University’s mission to develop educated people.
At times we face economic and social pressure to waiver in our commitment to liberal arts education. Despite this pressure, we must take care not to underestimate the value of the liberal arts and science education woven into our curriculum at Missouri State.
Our students learn critical skills through their coursework in communication, humanities, social sciences, and natural and applied sciences. Exposure to a broad range of diverse disciplines ensures that a student with a Missouri State degree possesses more than a high level of knowledge in a particular field. Rather, our graduates are well-rounded, possessing a broad range of skills that can be applied to whatever fields they pursue throughout their lives.
Faculty Senate recently recognized Missouri State’s responsibility to maintain a robust liberal arts curriculum by adopting a resolution at its October meeting publicly affirming the importance and inherent value of the faculty, departments and programs in the traditional liberal arts. I am proud to join our faculty and affirm my commitment to the traditional liberal arts. Based on my communications with the members of the Board of Governors, I know that the members of the board also share in this commitment.
Staff Excellence in University Service Awards
The University’s annual Staff Recognition Luncheon will take place on Jan. 7 in Hammons Student Center. At this luncheon we will recognize excellence among staff members with the Staff Excellence in University Service awards.
Through these awards the University recognizes six full-time staff employees with one-time $1,500 awards who strive to do their jobs well on a daily basis, go above and beyond the call of duty in a special situation, and have contributed in a significant way to the success of the University.
I would encourage each of you to nominate one or more full-time staff members for the Staff Excellence in University Service awards.
Thanks for all you do for Missouri State!
