St. Louis alum joins Board of Governors
Governor Nixon has appointed Gabriel “Gabe” Gore as the newest member of our Board of Governors. Governor Gore will represent the First District, and his term will expire on Jan. 1, 2021. We are excited about Mr. Gore’s appointment, and we are confident that his expertise will prove beneficial to Missouri State.
Mr. Gore is an alumnus of Missouri State University having received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in 1991. Mr. Gore is a partner with the Dowd Bennett law firm in St. Louis. He practices in the areas of complex civil litigation and white collar defense. Before coming to Dowd Bennett, Mr. Gore clerked for a federal appellate judge, served as an assistant United States attorney and served as an assistant special counsel for the John C. Danforth Office of Special Counsel. Mr. Gore has also worked with the Williams & Connolly law firm in Washington D.C. and the Bryan Cave law firm.
Please join me in congratulating Mr. Gore on his appointment and thanking him for his willingness to serve.
Board recognizes Citizen Scholars, hears from students
I also wanted to update you on a few items from our Board of Governors meeting last week.
The Board awarded the Citizen Scholar Award to six of our students: Zane Clark, Briana Duda, Melanie Morgan, Nadia Pshonyak, Caitlin Shukwit and Piper-Danay Smith. These six students have proven themselves successful academically, and they exemplify the public affairs mission.
I briefed the Board on our legislative priorities for the upcoming legislative session. You can read about these priorities and review our legislative materials on our Guide to the Legislative Session webpage.
The Board approved the naming of the renovated post office building on the West Plains campus. The building will be called Hass-Darr Hall thanks to major charitable gift commitments from Mary Hass Sheid and the William R. Hass family and from William and Virginia Darr.
The Board approved membership of next year’s executive committee, and Governor Peter Hofherr announced committee appointments for next year. The executive committee will include Governors Hofherr, Joe Carmichael, Virginia Fry and Carrie Tergin. The finance and facilities committee will be chaired by Governor Fry, and the programs and planning committee will be chaired by Governor Tergin.
Finally, the Board heard from four student speakers about the issues discussed in Governor Hoven’s and my recent diversity communication. The students presented a variety of viewpoints and discussed a broad range of issues. The student presentations included remarks about the campus climate, evidence of discrimination and ways we can improve our University.
The Board reiterated its denouncement of discrimination and racial inequity and its commitment to diversity and inclusion. I want to commend our student presenters for speaking up on these important issues. The remarks received at the meeting as well as the comments we have received over the past several weeks have given the Board and the administration a lot of guidance in how to continue to make our campus a welcoming environment for everyone.
Thanks for all you do for Missouri State!
