Today is Election Day. I encourage you to put the public affairs mission into practice and vote. Two important matters are on the ballot in Springfield.
Transportation improvement projects
First, two tax renewals are on the ballot. One is a 1/4 cent Capital Improvements Program sales tax. The other is a 1/8 cent Transportation tax. Both of these taxes fund high-priority transportation improvement projects in Springfield.
These are not new taxes. Instead, these sales taxes sunset every three or four years and this vote will renew those taxes. The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce recommends a “yes” vote on these tax renewals.
Springfield Board of Education elections
Second, elections for school board are on the ballot. Five names will appear on the ballot for Springfield Public Schools. Two of these individuals are Missouri State University employees:
- Allen Kunkel, associate vice president for economic development
- Melissa Penkalski, assistant professor, department of nursing
You can find more information about each of the five candidates in the recent KSMU story titled “Meet the Candidates for Springfield Board of Education.”
I would encourage everyone to learn about the candidates and cast an educated vote.
Community engagement is the third pillar of our public affairs mission. I want to congratulate Mr. Kunkel and Dr. Penkalski on engaging in the community by running for elected office.
I am confident they will represent Missouri State University well in their efforts.
Thanks for all you do for Missouri State!
