Last week I updated you on the first topic of discussion at the Board of Governor’s retreat — the university’s financial model. This week I want to highlight several of the other discussions and action items from the meeting.
Planning for the future of IDEA Commons
The board received an Enterprise Risk Management update from the Springfield and West Plains campuses. The board agreed with our recommendation that funding be moved to the top of our list of risks. This is consistent with the new direction I outlined in last weeks’ note.
The board spent the bulk of the afternoon touring the university’s three main facilities in IDEA Commons — JVIC, the Plaster Center (which houses The eFactory), and Brick City. The board then received presentations related to the university’s economic development work.
The first presentation related to the feasibility work underway for a public-private partnership to expand JVIC and develop another facility in IDEA Commons. We have been meeting regularly with the other stakeholders on this project, and the feasibility study is progressing. I will share additional information about this project as it unfolds in the months ahead. For more information about the project and the feasibility study, check out the July 18 Clif’s Notes.
The next presentation focused on the university’s entrepreneurship program housed in the College of Business. We discussed the potential to expand this program and deepen the relationship between our economic development assets in IDEA Commons and our academic assets in the College of Business.
The board also received an update on the status of the university’s public-private partnership for a new residence hall. The board discussed end-of-year reports from the office of research administration and the Foundation. The board also approved next year’s meeting schedule which includes one less board meeting in efforts to reduce expenses, and the board discussed potential changes to the university’s procurement practices that would maximize efficient use of the university’s resources.
