Universal Design: A New Paradigm for Designing Equitable and Inclusive Learning Environments
Event is free!
Open to current students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Registration is not required.
Date: November 5
Time: 2–3 p.m.
Location: Meyer Library 101
Presented by: Katheryne Staeger-Wilson, MSW, LCSW, Director, Disability Services Missouri State University
This presentation will examine the importance of changing how we perceive disability, shifting from the medical model to the socio-political model of disability. This new model is the foundation for incorporating Universal Design (UD). MSU’s Disability Services was recently selected to participate in a three-year grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education called Project ShIFT (Shaping Inclusion through Foundational Transformation). We will explore the opportunities of this grant; with the purpose of how UD can be applied to teaching to enhance the learning of all students.
The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning in collaboration with the Office of Disability Services will sponsor a book series on this topic during the Spring Semester 2010.
Call for Public Affairs Grant Applications for Spring 2010 Events
Deadline for Applications: October 30, 2009
The Office of Public Affairs Support is now accepting applications for the Public Affairs Grant Program. Applications are being requested for programs that will occur during the Spring 2010 semester. The Public Affairs Grant Program provides financial support to faculty, staff, and student organizations and groups to sponsor events for the campus community that are consistent with Missouri State University’s public affairs mission. These are events that provide opportunities for dialogue that encourage faculty, staff, and students to explore topics of public concern. Interdisciplinary and collaborative proposals are especially encouraged. The primary audience for these events is the campus community, but community participation with faculty, staff and students is welcome.
Application and proposal guidelines can be found at http://publicaffairs.missouristate.edu/grant/. For questions, contact Mary Ann Wood, Director of Public Affairs Support.

From the Faculty Senate Chair
The Faculty Senate Executive Committee would like to thank all faculty who were able to complete the Merit Compensation Process Survey by Monday at 10 a.m. Three-hundred and seventy-five faculty responded to the survey. Of those that responded, 111 indicated that they would like to “Continue the current merit system (Departmental committees and department heads will continue to assign annual numerical rankings, and the rankings for uncompensated years will be averaged when the raise pool exceeds 2%. No college matrices will be generated until the raise pool exceeds 2%.)”, and 262 indicated that they would like to “Temporarily suspend the merit system until the raise pool exceeds 2%. (Faculty will continue to submit materials for annual review, but neither the departmental committees nor the department heads will assign numerical rankings.)” These results, as well as the insightful written suggestions we received via email, were forwarded to the President’s University Compensation Committee. We would encourage you to be in contact with your college faculty representative on the committee. A complete listing of committee members is available on the Provost’s website in the Committee Handbook under “Faculty Resources”.
If you were unable to complete the survey by Monday at 10 a.m., please do take a moment to complete it. The survey is still available on the Faculty Senate website until tomorrow (Friday) at 5 p.m. At that time, we will forward the final results to the University Compensation Committee. Again, we greatly appreciate your participation.
In next week’s Communiqué, I will highlight some of the agenda items for the November session of the Faculty Senate.
Have a restful weekend–
