Online education today continues to develop at a rapid rate, and the practice of online teaching has evolved right along with it. One especially significant development in recent years has been the emergence of specific teaching competencies. This insightful, content-rich 90-minute seminar will articulate strategies, techniques and methods that faculty can use to manage their online teaching workload. You will be able to identify competencies to target for your online teaching success and elevate the quality of online instruction for MSU. Sponsored by Missouri State Online. From the Faculty Senate Chair
The next Faculty Senate meeting is scheduled for this afternoon (November 12) at 3:30 p.m. in PSU 315 (please note the room change).
- Deadline for college councils and committees to send curricular proposals to the Senate office is November 18. This will be the last group of proposals going out for challenge this semester.
- Town Hall meeting with President Nietzel, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. in PSU Theater. An audio of the last town hall meeting on October 28 is available by clicking on the “Financial Outlook” link on the university’s home page.
As I reported in the previous issue of the Communiqué, Rebecca Woodard, Faculty Senate Chair-elect, and I recently attended the Missouri Association of Faculty Senates. Four key issues surfaced during our discussions with other Senate representatives from across the state: 1) F + 1 health benefits, 2) concealed weapons on campus, 3) online course ownership, and 4) the proliferation of “Best Practices” documents. In this issue, I’ll focus on 2) and 4). I’ll address 1) and 3) in next week’s Communiqué.
House Bill 668 (often referred to as the “campus carry” bill) permits concealed weapons on college and university campuses in the state of Missouri. The Faculty Senates at Lincoln University, Northwest Missouri State University and Missouri Western University have passed resolutions opposing HB 668. In addition, the Senate at University of Missouri-Columbia passed a resolution supporting its president’s public statement opposing conceal and carry.
Most of the state universities in Missouri are experiencing a proliferation in “Best Practices” documents. The primary concern voiced was how these documents are interpreted. Are they considered policy and, thus, enforceable? No consensus exists. Interpretation seems to be specific to the institution. However, senators were all encouraged to seek clarification on these documents with their respective administrations.
Have a restful weekend and please let me know if I can be of assistance—
Margaret Weaver
