From the Faculty Senate Chair
Welcome Back!

The first Faculty Senate meeting of the spring 2010 semester is scheduled for this afternoon (January 14) at 3:30 in PSU 313. Curricular proposals under consideration include the deletion of the B.A. and B.S. in Public Administration and several courses not approved by the president (TCM 303, TCM 366, TCM 401, TCM 402, and TCM 502). The Senate will also be considering a proposed Senate Action from the Academic Relations Committee, including the addition of two new questions to the I-Grade Instructor Evaluation: “Were the course expectations clearly defined? Would you take this professor again if possible?” (based on SGA recommendations). The Ad Hoc Committee on Curricular Process will be presenting its report as well. This report contains four resolutions for the Senate’s consideration: 1) creation of a process by which Deans can give input on curricular proposals after they are approved by the College Councils, but before they are forwarded to the Senate; 2) review of library resource questions for new courses and programs by library faculty; 3) use of an electronic format for the curricular process; and 4) a calendar for the curricular process that is widely distributed. The last scheduled item of business is a proposed Senate Action to eliminate the current enrollment minimums established by central administration. As always, all faculty are invited to attend Senate meetings.
As most of you are aware, the Board of Governors has finalized the membership of the presidential search committee, including the appointment of three faculty members: Eric Bosch (CNAS), Melissa Burnett (COBA), and Pauline Nugent (Faculty Senate). For the complete membership, please refer to the official news release on the MSU home page. I should add that while Dr. Nugent is a COAL faculty member and was listed in the press release as such, she was appointed to the search committee as a member of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee. In addition to the two elected faculty nominees from each college, the Board also considered the elected members of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee as nominees for the search committee.
- Fall 2010 Blended Course Applications due to Deans on February 1.
- Annual merit reports due to departmental personnel committees on February 12.
Enjoy the long weekend–
