CNAS Public Lecture Series
Water Quality Concerns, Trends, and Progress in the
James River Basin
Date: Tuesday, February 14
Time: 7:30-8:30 p.m.
Location: Temple Hall 002
Speaker: Dr. Bob Pavlowsky, Professor, Department of Geography, Geology and Planning
The James River Basin is a unique place in the Missouri Ozarks. It is located in a limestone karst region where sinkholes and springs are common and influence the watershed greatly. Flowing over one hundred miles from its headwaters to Table Rock Lake at Galena, it drains into Springfield and other urban and rural communities along the way in one the fastest growing regions in the country. The James River watershed is an important source of drinking water, aquatic habitat, and recreation to its residents. However, these benefits can degrade if good water quality is not maintained. This presentation will discuss the water quality problems related to the effects of excessive inputs of nutrients, sediment, bacteria, and runoff in the James River and its major tributaries. Recent scientific studies of water quality in the basin will also be evaluated to identify flow and chemical trends. Finally, several water projects by state and local governments, university units, and watershed groups aimed to protect and improve water quality in the James River Basin will be reviewed to help predict the future condition of the James River.
Parking is available in Lot 4, South of Temple Hall

Historian & Lady Bears Coach to Reflect on First Champions in Women’s Collegiate Hoops
Date: Thursday, February 16
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Meyer Library Auditorium (Room 101)
Historian Julie Byrne will speak on the Immaculata College Mighty Macs, the subject of a 2011 feature film. Former Missouri State Lady Bears Coach Cheryl Burnett (who once played against the Macs) will respond to the talk.
Byrne is the author of O God of Players, the definitive history of the team that won the 1972, 1973, and 1974 collegiate women’s basketball championships. According to Yale historian Jon Butler, her book “recaptures the lost world of Catholic women’s basketball between 1940 and 1975 where faith, sweat, and even innocence triumphed as America and Catholicism changed uneasily and irrevocably.” Byrne holds the Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman Chair in Catholic Studies at Hofstra University. The title of her talk will be “O God of Players: Ten Years Later.”
Cheryl Burnett coached the Lady Bears from 1987 to 2002, including two NCAA Final Four appearances. As a college basketball player at the University of Kansas, she faced Immaculata on their home court. Burnett currently serves as a Director of Development at Missouri State University.
The Mighty Macs were featured in a 2011 movie praised by Tennessee Lady Vols Coach Pat Summitt and UConn’s Geno Auriemma. Byrne served as a consultant on the movie.
