Citizen Scholar Award Nominations
Nominations due at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 20
The Board of Governors is once again soliciting nominations for the annual Citizen Scholar Award. Since the award was created in 2007, 29 exceptional students have been chosen to receive this prestigious honor, and the Missouri State University Board of Governors is expecting to recognize six more outstanding students this fall.
If you are a faculty or staff member who knows of a student who excels academically and exemplifies the Public Affairs mission, please download the nomination packet from the Citizen Scholar homepage and submit it to the Office of Student Affairs. Please be sure to read the “Criteria for Consideration and Selection” sheet, and provide sufficient details in your submission.
Recipients will receive an engraved memento, and recognition on a plaque in Plaster Student Union, Room 313. In addition, winners of the Citizen Scholar award are recognized at breakfast before the December Board meeting and at various times throughout the academic year.

Power-up Sessions
The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning is offering a weekly schedule for one-hour workshops, seminars, or faculty panel discussions. These sessions are open to all faculty and other members of the instructional community. Each event will be offered twice during the same week and all sessions will be held in the FCTL Innovations Commons, Meyer Library Room 204.
The first session will be held next week.

Reading Group for Faculty: “The Joy of Teaching: A Practical Guide for New College Instructors”
Dates: Tuesdays, September 4, 11, and 18
Time: 2:00–2:50 p.m.
Location: Meyer Library 204
Dr. James Moyer, Professor or Religious Studies, will facilitate discussions on the book, “The Joy of Teaching” by Peter Filene. Dr. Moyer was honored with the MSU Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching in May 2012. He is an experienced mentor and freely shares his classroom experiences and teaching pedagogy. The reading group is recommended for any faculty member in their first five years of teaching.
Faculty may register through My Learning Connection. Each registered participant will receive a complimentary copy of the book.
You’re Invited to the Study Away Fair and Faculty Luncheon
If you’re thinking of leading a short-term study away program, please take advantage of these two opportunities next month:
- Stop by the Study Away Fair on Wednesday, September 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the PSU Atrium. Meet program providers and fellow faculty members who are leading short-term programs. Encourage your students to attend, as well.
- Attend the Study Away Fall Faculty Luncheon on Thursday, September 13 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in PSU 317. This interactive workshop will provide you with resources to maximize your students’ cultural awareness through short-term faculty-led study away programs. In recognition of outstanding online course design and teaching at Missouri State University, Missouri State Online is sponsoring the 2012 Master Online Course Recognition Award!
You can nominate your own class, or a class of your peers, or students may make nominations for the Master Online Course Recognition Award for Excellence in Online Course Design and Pedagogy by filling out the nomination form.

MS Online is Now Accepting New Online Course Applications

Starting now, MS Online is accepting new online course proposals for Summer and Fall 2013 delivery. Stipend proposals for Summer and Fall 2013 development must be received by Missouri State Online by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2012. Find the fillable form on the Outreach website.

Disaster Preparedness
Dates: Mondays, September 17 and 24
Time: 6:00–9:00p.m.
Location: Strong Hall 201
This course will discuss the hazards present in Southwest Missouri, the response system in place and methods the public can use to prepare themselves and their neighborhood in the event of an incident.

Languages for Fun: German, French, Chinese and Spanish
Dates: Mid-September–December
Time: 5:30–6:30p.m.
Location: Siceluff Hall
These weekly, 10-session courses are designed for beginners or anyone else interested in learning or reviewing the basics of a conversational foreign language. The focus will be on learning phrases that are useful in everyday contexts, including travel situations. Participants will learn the basics of pronunciation and will also practice questions and phrases relating to topics such as: family and home, studies and jobs, personal interests and hobbies, and food and travel. The lessons will also cover relevant cultural aspects and address tips for traveling abroad.

Fall Commencement Faculty Regalia Order Deadline—
October 12, 2012
The University Commencement Committee asks all academic department heads to encourage their faculty to participate in Fall Commencement on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., JQH Arena. Strong faculty participation makes for an impressive ceremony for our graduates and their families. Please note that recently hired faculty may not yet be in the Banner system and therefore might not have been included in the Commencement email that was sent out on August 22. Your assistance in ensuring all faculty are aware of the regalia order deadline is greatly appreciated.
