A Review of Major Environmentally-based Lawsuits in the United States from 2004–Present: One Measure of Corporate Social Responsibility
Date: Tuesday, October 7
Time: 7:30–8:30 p.m.
Location: Temple Hall 002
Presenter: Melissa Dallas, Professor, Hospitality and Restaurant Administration
This relevant and lively presentation will provide an overview of major lawsuits settled or decided during the past decade in which the well-being of an environmental asset was in dispute. The environmental assets were compromised due to a variety of causes including greenhouse gas emissions, chemical leaks, waste disposal, air pollution, and wetlands development. The outcomes of these suits are one indication of the lack of adoption of, and adherence to, sound corporate responsibility practices as first discussed in a seminal paper by Archie Carroll in 1991.

Time: 2:00 p.m.
Location: Carrington Hall 422
Please RSVP for the October 16 or October 28 session by emailing the Assessment office.

SOAR Leader Recruitment
Do you know students interested in strengthening skills employers demand like critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills? What about networking with faculty, staff, and student leaders? How about having fun while shaping the future student body of Missouri State? Then they might be interested in becoming a SOAR leader.
During Student Orientation, Advisement & Registration (SOAR) sessions, SOAR leaders assist new Missouri State students in making a comfortable and informed transition from high school to university life by discussing campus life, helping students build their first class schedule, and working with faculty and staff to help students foster relationships with others on campus. As you know, the vital role they play in the University’s recruitment and retention efforts demands that we select only the most talented, engaging, and responsible students for the SOAR team.
Please encourage your students to apply, both through your direct communications with them and by completing our online nomination form. If they are interested in the position, you may direct them to the SOAR website to learn more about responsibilities, qualifications, benefits, compensation and more. We also encourage them to attend one of our two upcoming SOAR leader information sessions:
- 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20 in Meyer Library 101
- 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21 in Meyer Library 101
Thank you in advance for passing this information on to your students and, by doing so, supporting the SOAR program. For more information contact us at Orientation@MissouriState.edu or (417) 836-7641.

Blackboard Feature Spotlight: SafeAssign
Academic Integrity Days are next week! Academic Integrity is extremely important at Missouri State University, and one of the ways that you can ensure your students are practicing it is by using SafeAssign to review papers submitted through Blackboard. SafeAssign can also be used to help students identify how to properly attribute sources and creates an opportunity to discuss academic integrity. The SafeAssign feature is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool. SafeAssign is fully integrated into Blackboard, so Instructors can create SafeAssignments in their Blackboard courses in the same way that they add standard Blackboard assignments.
Computer Services provides step-by-step instructions on using SafeAssign in this article in Experts. As always, if you have questions about using SafeAssign or any other issues with Blackboard, please contact the Computer Services Help Desk.
See the Blackboard Blog to learn more about the great features in Blackboard. Don’t forget about all the opportunities for Blackboard training from Computer Services at the Help Desk website, and learn how you can become a Blackboard Black Belt while you’re there! Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter too!
Suggest a Public Affairs Theme for 2016–2017
Public Affairs theme suggestions for the 2016–2017 academic year are now being accepted. As is the case with this year’s theme of The Ethical Citizen: Can you make a difference? and the 2015–2016 theme of Building Healthy Communities: Body, mind and spirit, the intent is to identify and adopt a theme that can permeate the campus community for the academic year. While public affairs themes generally focus on challenges in public policy or issues confronting our world, you are encouraged to submit any and all ideas. Ultimately, the theme will be developed in a collaborative manner involving representatives of the university and Springfield communities; these individuals will look for a concept that can engage and excite the campus through a broad topic and provide meaningful opportunities for learning. Deadline for theme submissions is 5 pm, Friday, October 17.
Download detailed information for suggesting a theme.
