On January 29th, Missouri State University was honored to host a visit by the recently commissioned 19th U.S. Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy. The purpose of Dr. Murthy’s visit was to conduct a “Listening Session” with public health professionals representing southwest Missouri, in order to hear the public health concerns in this region of the state. Some of the issues discussed included childhood obesity, community health workers, immunizations, chronic diseases, infant mortality, electronic cigarettes and others. Dr. Murthy is visiting select cities across the country in order to formulate the agenda for his administration. The U.S. Surgeon General’s visit was organized and sponsored by the Missouri State University Ozarks Public Health Institute. Seating for participants was limited to 35 by the Surgeon General’s request. Students enrolled in the Master of Public Health Program were given the opportunity to observe the meeting.
